In a recent development, Delhi Capitals Women’s team pacer Arundhati Reddy was fined 10% of her match fees after her side’s thumping 9-wicket win over Alyssa Healy’s UP Warriorz last night. The incident occurred during the 1st innings when Reddy gave a heated send-off to Poonam Khemnar after claiming her wicket in the last ball of the 15th over.

Arundhati Reddy was subsequently summoned by the Women’s Premier League officials for her foul behavior, stripping off 10% of her match fees. The right-arm bowler admitted to her mistake in accordance with the guidelines of the WPL code of conduct in which she made a level 1 offense under Article 2.5.

Article 2.5 clearly states that no player is allowed to use foul language or make uncanny gestures which can possibly trigger a reaction from a batter. This is the first time that an incident like this took place in the second edition of the WPL which kicked off on 23rd February.

WPL releases official statement on Arundhati Reddy probe

Authorities of WPL quickly took to their official website in order to address their sanctions on Reddy. The statement clearly read that after the match referee reported the incident, actions, and sanctions were bound to take place.

“Arundhati Reddy from Delhi Capitals has been fined 10% of her match fees for breaching the WPL Code of Conduct during her team’s match against UP Warriorz at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Monday.”

“Arundhati admitted to the Level 1 Offence under Article 2.5 of the WPL’s Code of Conduct which relates to using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon her dismissal during a match. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.” – the official WPL statement read.

This incident only tells us that sporting spirit is above everything and now the participating players will keep a check on their overflowing emotions while celebrating. Although it’s quite rare to see in Women’s cricket but it has definitely set the right example.

Amid Reddy’s fine, Delhi Capitals earn their maiden win of WPL 2024

Meanwhile, shifting our focus in the match then the Delhi Capitals had elected to bowl first after winning the toss at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru. Meg Lanning’s side would go on to put up one of the best-ever bowling performances in the short history of WPL.

Led by South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, the DC bowling unit came out as an improved one after enduring a last-ball loss against Mumbai Indians in their opening match. While Kapp registered player of the match-winning figures of 3/5 in 4 overs, left-arm off-spinner Radha Yadav scalped 4 wickets last night. Arundhati Reddy and Annabel Sutherland picked up a wicket each and restricted UP Warriorz to just 119.

It was a run-a-ball target of 120 and it was never supposed to pose a threat to the DC batting line-up led by Meg Lanning and Shafali Varma. The duo stood for a 119-run partnership for the 1st wicket before Lanning departed after scoring 51 off 43 and her partner in crime, Shafali 64 off 43 as well with Jemimah Rodrigues scoring the winning runs.
