Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that the England National Cricket Team fears Australia opener David Warner ahead of Ashes 2023, despite his recent struggles with the willow.

The 36-year-old has not played too much international cricket in the past year. Following a spectacular 200 against South Africa at his home ground in Melbourne in December 2022, Warner has not had the best time batting for the Kangaroos.

David Warner’s record in England is not too inspiring either. In 13 Tests he has played in the country, he has scored 651 runs with an average of 26.04. In the last Ashes series in the country, in 2019, he had a dismal run, scoring only 95 runs in 10 innings.

Despite all this, the reputation of David Warner arrives before him, as Michael Vaughan believes that the veteran batter can at any point have, “one of those innings.” In a recent interaction with The Age, Vaughan said –

IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)

“The one thing with David Warner, I know England fear him, I do know that the captain worries that Warner could come out of the traps and just have one of those series. And he’s never done it really in England. He doesn’t have much of a record here. I know Anderson and Broad don’t mind bowling to him. But the modern game seems to be available to out-of-the-box thinking more than ever. He doesn’t have to open the batting.”

Michael Vaughan ponders whether David Warner could play lower down the order for Australia in The Ashes

In the same interview, Michael Vaughan pondered whether Australia could play David Warner at no. 5-6. This is due to his ability to play spin bowling.

Warner is currently captaining Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2023. Despite him scoring 330 runs in 10 matches, his team is at the bottom of the table. The Aussie’s strike rate has too been very low this season.

Discussing the former Australia vice-captain’s ability to play spin, Vaughan said –

“David Warner is such a good player of spin. He’s such a good player when the ball that’s not moving. The ball won’t move after 30-odd overs in English conditions. Could they find a place for him at five or six?”
