With Australia well ahead of England in the ongoing five-match Ashes series, their former captain Tim Paine has backed them to win the series by a margin of 4-1.

Australia are currently leading the series 2-0 after winning the first two Tests. The Pat Cummins-led side won the first Test by 2 wickets before clinching the second Test by 43 runs at Lord’s. Australia are now on the verge of the winning a famous series. They have not won an Ashes series in England since 2001 and are just one win or two draws away from achieving it.

Tim Paine backs Australia to clinch Ashes:

While one draw in the remaining three Tests will be enough for Australia to retain the Ashes, avoiding losing two of the three Tests will see them win the series. Tim Paine, however, believes that Australia will continue their domination in the series and win it by a thumping margin of 4-1.

He also highlighted that England are missing the services of speedsters like Jofra Archer and Mark Wood. While Archer is not a part of the squad due to injury, Wood is a part of the squad but is yet to play in the ongoing series. He is likely to play the third Test.

“England have probably taken it a step too far. The declaration (in the first Test), the way they are talking in the media. The whole thing has been completely taken over the top. Having someone like Jofra Archer and Mark Wood offers a completely different dynamic,” Tim Paine told Daily Mail.

“If you have someone bowling that fast, it’s a completely different feeling in the changing rooms when you’re waiting to bat. I’m going for 4-1 depending on if Wood turns up because he can bowl a spell that could blow a Test wide open,” he added.

The crucial third Test is scheduled to be played from Thursday (July 6) at Headingley.
