Defending champions Perth Scorchers face a significant setback as skipper Ashton Turner has been ruled out of the remainder of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24. The Scorchers confirmed that Ashton Turner will be absent for the rest of the league due to a knee injury.

Ashton Turner suffered an injury to his right leg during the match against the Hobart Hurricanes on Wednesday. The all-rounder limped off the field after delivering his first ball. He left the field clutching his knee, casting uncertainty over his return to the field.

He underwent surgery for his right knee after the scans revealed a ‘meniscus tear.’ Notably, he grappled with the same injury in the initial phase of the domestic season, causing him to miss two Sheffield Shield matches and a Marsh One-Day Cup fixture before the BBL.

Ashton Turner’s Return Will Be Determined In Due Course – Perth Scorchers

The Perth Scorchers stated that Ashton Turner had been managing the injury for an extended period. The statement conveyed that the exact timeframe for Turner’s return will be determined in due course.

“The incident saw him leave the field and take no further part in the match, with subsequent scans revealing surgery was required. An exact timeframe for Turner’s return will be determined in due course,” the statement added.

The Scorchers coped well in the absence of their captain against the Hobart Hurricanes, successfully chasing down a par score of 172/8 with nine wickets to spare in just over 16 overs.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured the batter for his base price of Rs 1 crore in the IPL 2024 auction. The franchise would be concerned about the player’s fitness. However, Turner will face a tough challenge from overseas players to make it into the playing XI.

Lots Of People Are Willing To Help Out – Aaron Hardie

The Perth Scorchers are in the process of naming replacements for the captaincy and plan to announce their upcoming match. All-rounder Aaron Hardie and vice-captain Josh Inglis are among those in contention for the Scorchers’ captaincy.

Aaron Hardie emphasized that a sign of a strong team is the willingness of many individuals to contribute during the captain’s absence.

“You don’t plan for your captain to leave the field at any point. But there’s certainly a few of us who are involved in the strategy meetings before the game, so we all know plans bowling to certain batsmen.”

“I think a sign of a good team is that lots of people are willing to help out and there were certainly a few of us that were helping (with the captaincy),” said Hardie.

The defending champions are currently in second place in the table with five points to their tally. The team registered two wins out of three games and one no-result. They will take on the Melbourne Renegades in their next match at the Optus Stadium on December 26.
