Asia Cup 2023: Tamim Iqbal Steps Down As ODI Captain Of Bangladesh

In what will be a major blow to Bangladesh Cricket Team, Tamim Iqbal on Thursday (3rd August) stepped down as the captain of the team just ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The opening batter decided to lighten his workload.

This comes after Tamim Iqbal recently retired from the ODIs and after an intervention from Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he made a U-turn and took back his retirement, saying that he couldn’t say no to the leader of the country and hence will continue serving his country.

Tamim Iqbal in interaction with the press talked about his decision to step down from the captain of the ODI team. He remarked: “I will step down as captain and concentrate as a player and try to give my best whenever the opportunity comes.”

After Tamim Iqbal made a shocking announcement about his retirement, Bangladesh Cricket Board made Litton Das as the temporary skipper and it is likely that he will continue leading the team in the 50-over format after the opening batter’s decision.

Asia Cup 2023: Tamim Iqbal ruled out of the Asia Cup due to injury

Apart from Tamim Iqbal stepping down as the captain of the team, Bangladesh have also suffered a major blow as the batter has been ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. The opening batter faced a damaged disc ahead of the Test series against Afghanistan but despite not being fit he played the ODI series.

Tamim Iqbal after the ODI series went to England for his treatment. He took multiple injections to get fit. He will be taking time to heal and hence will be missing out on Asia Cup 2023. The senior batter is likely to make a comeback in the home ODI series against New Zealand, slated to take place from September 21st. He so far has played 241 ODIs, amassing 8,313 runs to go with 14 centuries.
