Asia Cup 2025: BCCI comes in conflict with Indian Government

With claims made that the National Sports Governance Bill 2025 is likely proposing to take the BCCI under its wing, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has decided to remain mum on this occasion and refrain from making any remarks.
The sources of ANI close to the Sports Ministry of India had revealed these changes on Tuesday, as the bill is expected to be tabled during the monsoon session of the Parliament.
Although the BCCI does not rely on government funding, its inclusion in the bill was anticipated with the India National Cricket Team's planned participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
Rajeev Shukla stays mum on Sports Governance Bill
Refraining from creating any unwanted buzz over the supposed inclusion of the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) under the wing of the Indian government, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla clearly stated he will make any remark only after going through the bill thoroughly.
“We will have to study the bill after it’s introduced. Only then can I express my views on it." Shukla said to ANI reporters.
The bill is likely to establish a legal framework and hence head for a transparent as well as fair operation of sports bodies, and with the LA Olympics approaching, this needs to be inculcated in cricket as well.
With several players also claiming a lack of chances, this bill also mandates athletes' representation in decision-making processes. The officials mentioned that the government's role would be that of a facilitator, not a controller.
BCCI is not a part of India's Sports Code—Explained
The BCCI is currently registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975, and oversees all aspects of cricket in India, both domestically and internationally. Under the current rule, the BCCI does not fall under the 45 recognized National Sports Federations. Whether the Indian cricket board comes under the bill’s scope, it might also be subject to the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
Officials mentioned that the National Sports Governance Bill aims to solve issues such as frequent litigation over NSF elections and athlete selections, insufficient athlete representation in federations, the lack of a dedicated dispute resolution forum, the imbalance between genders for sports leadership, and it marks the absence of proper electoral selections across federations.
Additionally, the bill seeks to resolve several more issues, which include the financial opacity and misgovernance in NSFs, while also addressing the lack of an internal grievance system.

BCCI still awaits the Indian government's green signal for the Asia Cup 2025
Ever since the Asia Cup 2025 was announced, India has been the scheduled host of the continental championship. However, it was clear that Pakistan would not travel to India, as per the deed signed before the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
However, the BCCI, despite constant pressure from the ACC, the Asian Cricket Council headed by the PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, has not issued any official statement on the probable hosting rights of the Asia Cup 2025.
Asia Cup 2025, which was scheduled for a window in September, has been thrown into major doubt. The ignorance of ACC towards BCCI's request to shift the AGM outside Dhaka has also been another concern for the fate of the Asia Cup 2025. The BCCI still awaits an official response from the Indian government on the Asia Cup 2025.
