The Asia Cup 2025 hangs in uncertainty as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to boycott the upcoming Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting scheduled in Dhaka on July 24. The decision comes amid ongoing political and diplomatic tensions with Bangladesh, raising doubts over the tournament.
India are set to host the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup. The tournament is reportedly set to begin on September 5, with the final slated for September 21. However, the multinational tournament’s future is now uncertain due to escalating tensions along the India-Pakistan border.
Notably, the BCCI recently announced that India's white-ball tour of Bangladesh, originally planned for August, has been postponed to 2026. The board did not disclose the reason for the postponement.
Asia Cup 2025 Uncertain Amid BCCI’s Boycott of ACC Meeting
The BCCI has informed both the ACC and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi that it will not attend the meeting if it takes place in Dhaka, according to a report by India Today.
“The BCCI has clearly communicated its stance to both the ACC and Chairman Naqvi. They've also personally requested a change in venue, but there has been no response so far,” the source told India Today.
The cricket boards of Sri Lanka, Oman, and Afghanistan have also expressed concerns over the venue. Despite the growing opposition, ACC Chairman Naqvi is reportedly adamant about holding the meeting in Dhaka.
Mohsin Naqvi Using Dhaka Venue to Pressure India
The absence of major member boards may render any decisions made there invalid under the council's constitution. This situation raises fresh doubt over the fate of the tournament, which is tentatively scheduled for September.
The report added that ACC Chairman Mohsin Naqvi wants to hold the meeting in Dhaka to pressure India. With just five days to go, the ACC has not issued any official update on shifting the venue, leaving the tournament’s future in serious doubt.
"Naqvi's insistence on keeping the meeting in Dhaka is being perceived as an attempt to exert undue pressure on India over Asia Cup matters. With only five days left until the scheduled meeting, no official communication has been made by the ACC regarding any venue change, leaving the future of the Asia Cup uncertain," sources further stated.
Politics Has Affected the Asia Cup Over the Years
The United Arab Emirates has emerged as an alternative venue due to the strained ties between the BCCI and PCB. Politics has impacted the tournament over the years. India skipped the 1986 edition due to differences with Sri Lanka, while Pakistan pulled out of the 1990 event hosted by India.
The 2023 edition was played in a hybrid model, with India playing their games in Sri Lanka and the rest of the tournament taking place in Pakistan.
India are the most successful side in the history of the Asia Cup, winning it eight times, including seven in ODIs and once in the T20 format. Sri Lanka have secured six titles, while Pakistan have won it twice.
