Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra recently shared his thoughts on India’s current leadership setup across formats. He questioned whether having three different captains for each format is the best approach for India ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.
Presently, Shubman Gill is India’s Test captain, and Rohit Sharma remains captain in ODIs after retiring from Test and T20I formats, while Suryakumar Yadav leads the T20I team.
The former batter pointed out that the current three-way split might not be ideal and suggested that the BCCI and the national selectors consider reducing it to two captains.
Aakash Chopra questions the three-captain formula ahead of the Asia Cup 2025
There are rumors that Shubman Gill will be named as the vice-captain in the T20Is, which means Axar Patel would lose his position, and Chopra feels the upcoming changes will be tricky for India.
Chopra believes that having two captains would be the best option, as three different leaders could make things unnecessarily complicated for the team’s long-term planning.

Aakash Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel, “Shubman Gill in Test matches, Rohit Sharma in ODIs, and Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is—three formats and three captains. Is it right? Will there be any change in that? Will a captain be handed two formats? Will you start introducing Shubman Gill in T20s?”
The commentator added, “There could be a temptation. There are rumors as well. If that happens, will you make Shubman Gill the vice-captain instead of Axar in T20Is for continuity? This is going to be a slightly tricky one. I feel two captains are enough. Having three captains becomes a bit much.”
Aakash Chopra warns of confusion in Indian Cricket
Meanwhile, Aakash Chopra also questioned whether the current three-captain approach is hurting the team’s consistency. He mentioned that a captain plays a direct and crucial role on the field, making quick, instinctive calls, and that’s why stability in leadership is very important.
Many teams prefer one captain for red-ball cricket and another for white-ball formats, but Indian cricket has always backed a one-captain policy. However, Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20I and then Test has disturbed that consistency.
Hence, the Men in Blue now have separate captains for Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, and that could make things complicated for the players, as felt by the cricket analyst.
Chopra further explained, “I can still understand two captains. However, three captains for three formats, then it complicates a few things because there will be an overlap somewhere or other in the three formats.”
Aakash Chopra says switching captains could disrupt the winning formula
The commentator stressed that the team is constantly adjusting to new strategies and mindsets due to switching between captains, and it might create confusion and dilute the overall game plan.
He signed off by saying, “If you see, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul are playing Tests and ODIs, and Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj are playing all three formats, and suddenly you realize that there is a lot of overlap. If the players are overlapping and the captain changes every time and goes with a different thought process, it leads to dilution.”
