India is reportedly set to be without ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming fifth and final Test against England at The Oval, starting on Thursday, July 31. According to The Times of India, the star fast bowler is unlikely to feature in the series decider, and it's not due to workload management concerns.
India kept the Test series alive with their performance in the fourth match. They finished the second innings at 425/4. Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, and Ravindra Jadeja scored centuries to help India avoid defeat. India, who are trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, now have a chance to draw the series.
Jasprit Bumrah Reportedly Nursing Ankle Injury Sustained at Old Trafford
Jasprit Bumrah is reportedly nursing an ankle injury sustained while climbing stairs at Old Trafford. Bumrah returned to bowl with the second new ball but lacked his usual effectiveness.
He has featured in three of the four Tests so far, taking 14 wickets at an average of 26, including two five-wicket hauls. Bumrah is currently the second-highest wicket-taker in the series. However, he was not at his best in the fourth Test, returning figures of 2/112 from 33 overs with noticeably reduced pace.
Before the series began, Bumrah was expected to play only three Tests as part of a workload management plan. With that quota met and his fitness now in question, his availability for the series decider remains uncertain.
Gautam Gambhir Says All Pacers Are Fit, Final Call on Bumrah Yet to Be Made
Jasprit Bumrah’s participation could be important for India, but with just a three-day gap between matches, there are concerns. Head coach Gautam Gambhir also confirmed that all pacers are fit and added that no final call has been made on Bumrah yet.
Bumrah is a crucial player for India across all formats in a packed schedule ahead. The team may consider resting him to avoid long-term risks. He is India’s premier fast bowler, and his fitness is vital for future assignments.
A loss would mark India’s third consecutive Test series defeat, following setbacks against New Zealand and Australia. India has also struggled in England in recent years, losing three of their last four Test series, with the 2-2 draw in 2021–22 being the only exception.
Jasprit Bumrah to Miss Oval Test Due to Niggle, Not Workload Concerns
Times of India Senior Assistant Editor Gaurav Gupta has reported that Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval due to a niggle. Gupta shared that fitness concerns are behind Bumrah’s likely absence.
"Hearing that ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah is missing the Oval Test due to a niggle...and not due to any workload management concerns.. #IndiavsEngland #JaspritBumrah," Gauram Gupta wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

India will need Bumrah in peak condition for the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup. Losing Bumrah to injury in red-ball cricket would be a significant setback, given the current depth in India’s pace attack.
