The upcoming season of the Asia Cup 2025 has been put under major doubt amid the rising tensions between major cricket boards like the BCCI and the PCB. Bangladesh Cricket Board has now taken a major decision amid the conflict over the continental championship.

The upcoming edition of the Bangladesh Premier League may be shifted from its current window in December-January to the May window. The BPL chairman, Mahbub Anam, made this announcement after a board of directors meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on the 10th of July.

Mahbub also mentioned that now they would have to wait for the government's response before making any further decisions on the schedule of the BPL, with May being another possible window.

What is the reason behind BPL's postponement?

The postponement of the Bangladesh Premier League has been cited due to the upcoming general elections in the country. Announcement regarding the BPL chairman came a day after the chief adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, directed all the concerned agencies to completely ensure preparations by the end of December.

These decisions have been made by the government to allow peaceful and orderly elections in the province, which has undergone immense political tensions over the last year.

"BPL slot may change due to the elections," said Mahbub. "BPL [could be] before December, or another slot is being planned. We will take the next steps depending on the government's decision, and in this regard, May [window] is another option."

BCB looks for reform in BPL management

Alongside making the crucial announcement, Mahbub also made some other policy changes for the upcoming season of the Bangladesh Premier League.

The BCB has often been criticized for its management of the Bangladesh Premier League, which draws several players from international stages of the game. Hence, Mahbub gives insights into appointing a sports management consultancy firm to run the tournament.

BCB was also noted for giving advertisements for the Express of Interest for the appointment of a sports marketing consultancy firm. The priority has been mentioned only for firms that have experience in previously managing international T20 leagues in the past.

"BPL needs to set up its own standard. In the past there were some mistakes and BCB need to take the responsibility. We will try to increase the brand value of BPL," mentioned Mahbub.

BCCI's response to the Asia Cup 2025 is still awaited

The Asia Cup 2025 has been under much talk since this is the first time there has been immense doubt over the two main teams, India and Pakistan's, participation in the competition.

India is undoubtedly one of the most successful sides in the Asia Cup with the most number of titles, and they have been named the host nation for the Asia Cup 2025.

However, the BCCI is still awaiting a nod from the Indian government before it can announce anything related to the Asia Cup 2025.

A hybrid model will again be in use, as Pakistan had landed such a deal when India opted to play in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in a hybrid model.

India has postponed a series against Bangladesh recently and is now looking forward to a possible Sri Lanka white-ball tour before the Asia Cup 2025.
