As the Bangladesh tour was already postponed to next year due to the political situation in the country, and the fate of the Asia Cup 2025 is still uncertain, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is exploring options to utilize the mid-August to September window.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is still waiting for a green signal from the Indian government before confirming India's participation in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, especially in matches involving Pakistan, after the Pahalgam attack earlier this year.
The Pahalgam terror attack has made things once again worse between India and Pakistan, which has raised questions over whether the Men in Blue will play against the Men in Green in the upcoming Asia continental tournament.
BCCI seeks Govt clearance for Asia Cup 2025
Although BCCI is the official host of the Asia Cup 2025, the final decision now rests with the Indian government. As reported by SportsTak, the BCCI has kept the UAE as a backup option to host the tournament if the original plan doesn't work out due to political tensions.
The Indian board has already sent the proposal for the tournament and is awaiting government approval. According to the proposed schedule, the tournament will commence on September 5, with the India vs. Pakistan match scheduled for September 7.
A top board source close to the developments was quoted as saying by Sports Tak, “The proposal for the Asia Cup to be played in the UAE was drafted even before the Pahalgam attack. The situation has changed since then, so whatever the government says, we will abide by it.”

With the Asia Cup 2025 in doubt, the BCCI plans Tri-Nation Series as a backup
If the clearance doesn't come through for Asia Cup 2025, the BCCI is already considering a Plan B, and that is organizing a tri-nation series during the same window where India was scheduled to travel to Bangladesh next month and host the Asia Cup in September.
The board is reportedly keen on making sure India still plays competitive cricket ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, even if the tournament does not get the government’s clearance. Originally, India was also supposed to travel to Bangladesh in August for a three-match ODI and T20I series.
Sri Lanka offers series; BCCI looks for Tri-Nation Series
Since the tour was postponed, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has now reportedly offered a similar bilateral series to India. This could potentially see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s return to action in Indian colors, as both have retired from Tests and T20Is.
The SportsTak claimed that the BCCI has not yet accepted the SLC’s offer, as they are currently considering staging something bigger in that window if the Asia Cup fails to get the clearance from the Indian government. They are mulling over conducting a tri-nation series for better utilization of that window, and they have already been approached by some big cricket boards.
The Asia Cup is set to be played in T20 format this year, making it a crucial build-up tournament for all teams ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2025. The final call is expected to be taken in the next couple of weeks, with the sports ministry yet to react to the proposal.
