In a major development for Bengal cricket, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly is all set to return as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for a second term. Earlier, Sourav Ganguly had denied the role following his stint as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president.

As reported by CricBlogger, Ganguly will soon once again take over as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB)—the same position he held before becoming BCCI president in 2019. He is expected to succeed his elder brother, Snehasish Ganguly, as the CAB president.

However, it remains unclear whether the decision to bring the former Indian captain back to the CAB will be unanimous, but his recent efforts to connect with the state association members have been warmly welcomed, making the path for his return smoother than before.

The former BCCI president’s comeback is being seen as a big boost for Bengal cricket, with many hopefuls that his strong leadership and experience will take the game to greater heights once again in the state.

A source told CricBlogger, “It’s great news for Bengal cricket that Dada is back in CAB (Cricket Association of Bengal) again.”

Sourav Ganguly’s CAB return may end his Delhi Capitals stint

Notably, Ganguly, who retired from international cricket in 2008 and all forms of cricket in 2012, was elected as the CAB president in July 2014 and served until 2019. After his tenure as BCCI president, the legendary cricketer was named Director of Cricket of Delhi Capitals in the IPL.

If the former BCCI president is elected as CAB president, it will likely bring an end to his time with the Delhi Capitals. The former Indian batter was earlier working as their director of cricket but was replaced by Venugopal Rao before IPL 2025.

After that, Ganguly continued working as the Delhi Capitals women’s team director in the WPL and was also involved with the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 league.

Sourav Ganguly’s career highlight

Speaking about Sourav Ganguly’s career, he is one of India's most iconic cricket captains, who is fondly called "Dada." Known as the "Prince of Kolkata," Ganguly made his international debut in 1992 and made his Test debut at Lord’s in 1996 with a stunning century.

He went on to play 113 Tests and 311 ODIs, scoring over 18,500 international runs. Ganguly hit 38 centuries and 107 fifties across formats in the international arena. The stylish left-handed batter had formed a formidable opening pair with Sachin Tendulkar in ODIs.

After retiring, he became a commentator and served Indian cricket in administrative roles.
