A last-minute change might be on the cards for the India squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. Suryakumar Yadav’s availability for the much-awaited tournament remains the biggest concern for the Indian National Cricket Team. Suryakumar Yadav is likely to miss the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.
Suryakumar Yadav had sports hernia surgery in Munich, Germany, in June 2025. He is now recovering at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and is getting close to full fitness. Surya has been training at the NCA under the medical team’s eye, focusing on his strength, movement, and batting skills.
Suryakumar Yadav’s availability is in doubt amid fitness recovery
Even India’s T20I captain has recently shared a video of him training and batting at the NCA. There were also reports that everything was going smoothly and on track, but the fresh report has raised serious doubts over Suryakumar’s availability for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.
A Revsportz journalist has suggested everything was set for the players, but the final Asia Cup 2025 squad could see a last-minute change. He also claimed that Suryakumar Yadav is currently in Japan for a couple of days, and the final decision is expected once he returns.
The journalist posted, X: “Things were looking good till yesterday in every report for a player or 2, but there could be a last-minute change for the Asia Cup squad. Captain Suryakumar Yadav is in Japan for a couple of days. Let’s wait for the captain and a last call.”

India’s Asia Cup 2025 campaign to open against UAE
Meanwhile, India was placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Oman, and the UAE in the Asia Cup 2025. The Men in Blue will begin their campaign against the UAE on 9 September, followed by a high-voltage clash with Pakistan on 13 September.
Their group stage concludes with a match against Oman on 19 September. If India advances, they could meet Pakistan again in the Super Four stage and possibly in the final. Well, Shubman Gill, India’s Test captain, is likely to return to the T20I squad after more than a year.
Gill’s performance in the IPL 2025 has impressed the selectors. He has made 650 runs for the Gujarat Titans in the title. There are chances the Test skipper could open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma, with Sanju Samson at No. 3 and Suryakumar Yadav at No. 4.

Yashasvi Jaiswal likely as reserve opener, Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma fight for No. 5 in Asia Cup 2025 squad
Yashasvi Jaiswal may join as a reserve opener, even though he hasn’t played many T20Is recently. India’s middle order could see Shreyas Iyer, who scored 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07 for Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025, compete with Tilak Varma, who has 749 runs in 24 T20Is at a strike rate of 155.07, for the No. 5 spot.
Rinku Singh or Shivam Dube is likely to be added as backup options. Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel are expected to take the all-rounder positions at No. 6 and 7, while Washington Sundar could provide extra batting depth to the side. Wicketkeeping duties will be handled by Sanju Samson, with Ishan Kishan or Dhruv Jurel as backups in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.
