Team India captain Rohit Sharma has congratulated India’s men’s and women’s teams for winning the historic gold medal in the ongoing Asian Games 2023.

After being a part of the multi-sports event in 2010 and 2014, cricket was dropped for the 2018 edition before making a return for the ongoing edition. After deciding against participating in the event in 2010 and 2014, the BCCI sent the men’s and women’s teams for the ongoing event and the teams have made the most of it.

While the BCCI named a full-strength women’s team, they had no choice but to name a second-string side for the men’s event due to the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023. Ruturaj Gaikwad was named the captain for the second-string men’s team while incumbent Harmanpreet Kaur led the women’s team. Both the teams started their campaign from the quarterfinal stage due to their top seeding.

Rohit Sharma congratulates teams for historic gold medal:

The women’s team began their campaign against Malaysia in the quarterfinal. The match was washed out and India progressed to the semifinal where they beat Bangladesh by eight wickets. In the final, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side beat Sri Lanka by 19 runs to clinch India’s first-ever gold medal in cricket in the Asian Games.

On the other hand, the men’s team began their campaign with a 23-run win over Nepal in the quarterfinal before beating Bangladesh by nine wickets in the semifinal. In the final, India were up against Afghanistan and were declared the winners after rain washed out the game on Saturday (October 7).

And with the entire country congratulating the teams for the historic gold medals, India men’s team captain Rohit Sharma also congratulated both the teams for the historic achievement. Speaking to the media ahead of their World Cup opener, Rohit Sharma said:

“It’s a very big moment for the country to win Gold Medal in Asian Games. We could never win a gold for India but our men’s and women’s team did it. It’s a great feeling and congratulations to everyone involved.”

Rohit Sharma-led India will open their World Cup campaign against Australia on Sunday (October 8).
