Australian batter Usman Khawaja said that either of Australia team captains should address the matter after head coach Justin Langer stepped down from the role.

After days of speculation over Langer’s contract with Cricket Australia, the former opening batter tendered his resignation from the head coach role on Saturday (February 5).

Langer’s four years of contract with Cricket Australia was supposed to end in June with Australia’s tour of Pakistan could have been his last task.

Cricket Australia had a lengthy meeting with Langer on Friday (February 4) but the two parties couldn’t pen a suitable deal. The Australian board stated that they offered Langer a short-term deal but that wasn’t sufficient for him.

After Langer tendered his resignation from the head coach’s position, many former cricketers, especially his old teammates, have slammed Cricket Australia for their approach.

Aaron Finch and Pat Cummins will probably have to stand up and answer some questions: Usman Khawaja

Khawaja said he wasn’t much aware about the situation but asked Test skipper Pat Cummins and limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch to publicly talk about the Langer fiasco.

“I didn’t really know what was going on. I wasn’t part of the process. I just came back into the team a few months ago.I’ve been a little bit out of it. There’s obviously a lot of ex-players talking about the playing group,” Khawaja told Australian reporters.

“I think at some stage, one of the captains, ‘Finchy’ or Patty, will probably have to stand up and answer some questions just to get rid of all the speculation that’s going around and to just put an end to it all,” he added.

Justin Langer brought humility back to the Australian team: Usman Khawaja

Langer was appointed as the head coach of Australia after the infamous ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town. Under him, Australia retained the Ashes in England (in 2019), won the ODI series in India (3-2 in 2019), T20 World Cup 2021 (in UAE) and The Ashes in Down Under (last series in charge).

Khawaja, who recently made a come back to Australia’s Test side in the Ashes, said Langer brought humility back to the Australian team.

I feel for the man himself because I’ve got along with Justin for a long time. I love him as a bloke, he’s a legend, and on a personal level, whether I got dropped or whether he’s not the Australian coach, we both have that relationship,” he asserted.

He brought humility back to the Australian team … I know what we played like before he was coach and I know what we played like when he was coach,” the Queensland skipper added.

Assistant coach Andrew McDonald was named as the interim coach, he will take the charge of the Australian national team for the five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, starting on February 11 in Sydney.
