Nabi was finally handed the India debut cap in Guwahati, but he failed to make the most of the hard-earned opportunity that came only because of the injuries and unavailability of some of the key players. Nabi had a forgettable India debut against the West Indies in Guwahati.
The Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler created an unwanted record during his ODI debut for India against West Indies at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Nabi ended his spell with 84 runs conceded, making him the most expensive Indian bowler on ODI debut.
With his costly spell, Nabi surpassed Karsan Ghavri’s long-standing record for the most expensive Indian bowler on ODI debut. Ghavri had conceded 83 runs in 11 overs against England at Lord’s in 1975. Nabi gave away 84 runs in just 8.5 overs.
Not just that, Nabi’s economy rate of 9.51 is also the worst by an Indian bowler on an ODI debut, among those who have bowled at least 30 balls. Not just Nabi, Gurnoor Brar also had a really poor outing in Guwahati. By giving away 96 runs in the second ODI against the West Indies, Brar put his name among India’s most expensive ODI spells.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar holds the unwanted record after giving away 106 runs against South Africa at Wankhede in 2015. Vinay Kumar conceded 102 against Australia in Bengaluru in 2013, while Brar gave away 97 against England at Lord’s in 2026. Now, Brar's second most expensive spell came in Guwahati against the West Indies.

Varun Aaron questions Auqib Nabi’s selection after costly outing on ODI debut
Former India pacer Varun Aaron has questioned Auqib Nabi’s selection after his poor outing in Guwahati. Aaron believes that Nabi is a strong red-ball bowler and could have been given a chance in the recent Test series against Sri Lanka.
The former fast bowler also feels that using Nabi in an ODI on a flat pitch could hurt his confidence, saying the hosts should have played Mohammed Siraj in Guwahati instead.
Varun Aaron said on air, “Auqib Nabi is a great Test bowler. He should have played against Sri Lanka, but they didn’t give him a chance. Now, they’re playing him in an ODI on a flat track and crushing his confidence."
