The verbal battle between the English and Australian cricket fraternity is showing no signs of slowing down. And in the latest turn of events, former Australia pacer Glenn McGrath has taken a brutal dig at England.
Glenn McGrath has not shied away from venting his frustration over any controversial incident in the ongoing Ashes series. The legendary bowler did not mince his words when Mitchell Starc’s catch on the fourth day of the second Test was ruled out by the umpire. He called the decision a ‘disgrace’ while being on air.
And the multiple World Cup and Ashes-winning bowler has been very vocal on the ongoing controversy too that erupted after Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal on the final day of the Test. Bairstow was stumped by Alex Carey after he wandered out of the crease believing that the ball was dead.
While the dismissal was well within the laws of the game, the English cricket fraternity has been busy slamming Australia for not following the spirit of the game. A lot has been said and done about the incident since then and it looks like it would continue for some time now.
Glenn McGrath’s brutal dig at England:
Ahead of the third Test, Glenn McGrath has taken a sly dig at England while writing in his column for the BBC. While he admitted that Bairstow’s dismissal was ‘not his favorite’, he did not see any problem with it. McGrath stated that he made up his mind to back Australia after ‘every single one of the former players I have spoken to, English or Australian, did not have a problem with it’.
“Even West Indies legend Brian Lara has said it was out,” McGrath wrote.
Writing further, he poked fun at England’s famous ‘Bazball’ approach that has not really yielded the desired result in the ongoing series so far. The legendary bowler said that instead of Bazball, England have been playing ‘Cazball’ as he called out their casual attitude.
“Bairstow’s dismissal epitomises what we have seen from England in this series. It has been Casual Ball – CazBall if you will, not Bazball,” McGrath said.
McGrath also pointed out some of the reasons he believes are responsible for England’s poor display in the ongoing Ashes. He highlighted England’s casual approach, writing: “Maybe there is accountability inside the dressing room but the noise coming out is ‘we give the batters freedom’ and ‘it’s up to them’.”
“That is like running a race, finishing 27th and someone giving you a medal. This is Test cricket. It is the Ashes!” added McGrath.
The Third Test is scheduled to get underway on Thursday (July 6) at Headingley. England need to win the game at any cost to keep alive their slim chances of winning the series.
