Australia, on Friday (January 19), beat West Indies by 10 wickets in the first Test at the Adelaide Oval to take an unassailable lead in the two-match series. After bowling out the visitors for 120 runs in the second innings, the home side chased down the modest total of 26 runs with ease to wrap up the Test inside three days.

After bowling out Australia for 283 on day 2, West Indies started disastrously with the bat and finished the day on 73/6, still trailing by 22 runs. It took Australia just over an hour to wrap up the West Indies innings on the third day.

Joshua Da Silva and Alzarri Joseph began the proceedings with the bat on day 3. The duo could add only 11 runs to the overnight score before a well-directed short ball from Mitchell Starc sent back Da Silva, West Indies’ last recognized batsman.

The wicketkeeper-batsman departed after scoring 18 runs. At that stage, an innings defeat was pretty much on the cards. However, the likes of Joseph (16), Kemar Roach (11*), and Shamar Joseph (15) helped the visitors avoid an innings defeat and set Australia a modest target of 26 runs. Starc picked up 2 wickets on the third day while Hazlewood and Lyon claimed one wicket apiece. Hazlewood was the pick of the bowlers in the second innings, taking 5 for 35.

“We thought the bowlers did really well. Batting-wise, we didn’t bat well, we didn’t get going in both innings. As batsmen, it was about getting a feel of Test cricket, a feel of how it is to play against the number 1 side. It’s important for them to learn and learn fast. He’s (Shamar Joseph) a guy full of energy, he has a great vision and skill. He’s done a good job,” said West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite.

AUS vs WI: Australia chase down modest total:

Chasing 26 runs, Australia crossed the finishing line with ease in the seventh over. The win, however, was marred by a blow to Usman Khawaja’s chin. The home side was just one run short of the win when a short delivery from Joseph rose sharply and went on to hit the Australia opener.

With the win all but sealed, Khawaja did not take any risk and decided to walk off the field. Marnus Labuschagne then scored the winning run to give his side a well-deserved win. Earlier in the game, West Indies were bowled out for 188 runs in their first innings before they dismissed the hosts for 283.

Brief scores: West Indies 188 (Kirk McKenzie 50, Shamar Joseph 36; Pat Cummins 4-41, Josh Hazlewood 4-44) & 120 (Kirk McKenzie 26; Josh Hazlewood 5-35) lost to Australia 283 (Travis Head 119, Usman Khawaja 45; Shamar Josepg 5-94) & 26/0 (Steve Smith 11*) by 10 wickets
