Australia Women, on Saturday (February 3), thrashed South Africa women by eight wickets in the first ODI at the Adelaide Oval to take the lead in the three-match AUS vs SA W ODI series.
Australia captain Alyssa Healy won the toss and opted to bowl first. Her decision was completely justified by the bowlers as they bowled out the visitors for a paltry total of 105 runs in 31.3 overs. The first four batters including captain Laura Wolvaardt failed to reach double digits as Australia had the tourists reeling at 9 for 3 and then 34 for 4.
Megan Schutt gave the home side the early breakthrough by dismissing Wolvaardt for 4 before Kim Garth dismissed Anneke Bosch for a duck. Ellyse Perry then castled Tazmin Brits for 1 while Annabel Sutherland sent back Sune Luus for 6 to put the hosts on top.

The likes of Chloe Tryon (10) and Nadine de Klerk (18) got the starts but failed to capitalize on them. Even the 100-run mark was looking impossible at one stage but a fine fifty from allrounder Marizanne Kapp helped South Africa post a respectable total. Her knock ended in an unfortunate manner as she had to retire hurt after being struck on her left elbow by a throw while completing a second run to reach her fifty.
The lower order could not delay the inevitable for long and South Africa were bowled out for just 105. For Australia, Alana King picked up 3 wickets while Kim Garth accounted for two scalps.

Chasing a modest total of 106 runs, Australia crossed the finishing line in 19 overs. Healy and Phoebe Litchfield did not let the visitors make early inroads in the game by sharing a 38-run stand for the opening wicket. Masabata Klaas broke the stand by dismissing Litchfield for 12.
Four runs later, Nadine de Klerk dismissed Healy for 19 to reduce Australia to 42 for 2. The twin breakthroughs, however, did not make much of a difference for South Africa as Australia scored the required runs without losing any more wickets. Perry and Beth Mooney shared an unbeaten stand of 64 runs to take their team home. Perry scored 16 while Mooney scored 52.
