Cricket Australia chief selector George Bailey admitted that off-spinner Nathan Lyon has probably reached the end of his illustrious international career. The veteran off-spinner has taken 567 Test wickets, but Bailey said that a severe hamstring injury threatens his future in international cricket.

Lyon suffered a torn hamstring tendon during the third Ashes Test last December. He missed three of five Tests against England last summer at home, where Australia secured a 4-1 series victory. Notably, he played 100 consecutive Tests between 2013 and 2023 before calf and hamstring injuries.

Pretty Significant Hamstring Tendon Injury - George Bailey on Nathan Lyon

George Bailey stated that nobody knows exactly how long Nathan Lyon can continue playing professional cricket. Bailey said that Lyon might never return to his absolute peak physical condition after the injury.

"It's a pretty significant hamstring tendon injury to a 38-year-old, so there's a sense of realism it may not ever get back to the upper echelon of where you need it to," Bailey said, as quoted by DailyMail.

Following his initial medical assessment, Bailey stated that Cricket Australia must strategically plan around Lyon missing matches. He added that expecting Lyon to play consecutive Test matches is no longer realistic for the Australia national cricket team.

"So what does that look like? 'It may mean there's not necessarily the capacity to play big blocks of games, and you may have to look at that. 'It's just being a little bit aware that's a possibility."

He Was Really Close to Playing in Sydney - George Bailey on Todd Murphy

With uncertainty over Nathan Lyon, Cricket Australia added Todd Murphy to the central contracts list. George Bailey said that Cricket Australia want to keep Todd Murphy closely connected with the Australia team ahead of demanding Test tours.

“We're just trying to maintain that connection, particularly with Todd. He was really close to playing in Sydney. We like the skill set that he brings,” Bailey stated.

Bailey said that Murphy and other backup spin bowlers will become necessary. He added that upcoming international tours will require strong spin-bowling depth for Australia to secure victories against strong opposition teams.

"India, we know we're going to need the spin depth. England, we know we're going to need some spin depth. Not entirely sure that'll be applicable for South Africa (in October). And then the Top End (against Bangladesh) is probably a little bit of an unknown," he added.

Australia Set for Busy Test Schedule, Focus on Spin Depth Ahead of Key Tours

Australia have a busy Test schedule starting in August, when they host Bangladesh. That series will begin a packed 12-month period in which they could play up to 21 Tests, including tours of South Africa, India, and England.

Australia are scheduled to play nine Tests in just 12 weeks between December and March, including a five-Test series against India in India. After that, they will head to England for the Ashes.

Nathan Lyon is expected to return for the two Tests against Bangladesh in August after suffering a hamstring injury. His teammates are confident about his comeback, especially after he previously bounced back from a torn calf in the 2023 Ashes and went on to take 71 wickets at an average of 24.22.

After playing three of five Tests without a specialist spinner last summer, the team management is now prioritizing depth in that department. Todd Murphy has been added to the central contracts list ahead of the demanding India tour, while Lyon and Matt Kuhnemann continue to remain part of the setup.
