Australia faced a crushing defeat to Sri Lanka in their last chance to make it to the next stage of the tournament. They were brought into this scenario after having lost the second game of the competition against Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe have the chance to cause another major upset with their next match scheduled against Ireland on the 17th.

After back-to-back losses for the Aussies against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, their chances of qualification have been dimmed by an awkward margin. With 10 teams still in contention for the remaining three spots in the ICC T20 World Cup Super-8s, here is a detailed view of the qualification scenarios of the teams.

Qualification Scenario of all teams in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026

With England and the West Indies having qualified for the next stage of the tournament, nothing is left for Group C; however, for all other groups, only one spot has been finalised. Several teams are still in contention for the second spot from Groups A, B and D.

Group A Super 8 Qualification Scenario after Pakistan's loss to India

India have already qualified from Group A, while the likes of the USA, Pakistan and the Netherlands are in contention for the other spot in the Super-8s. India are undefeated with three wins, and the USA and Pakistan have managed 2 wins so far.

The scenario seems inclined more towards Pakistan's way, as their last game is scheduled to be played against Namibia. The USA can come into the scenario only if Namibia defeats the Pakistan side.

The Netherlands also has a very slight chance, but that would be in a scenario of miracles. It will happen if Namibia defeats Pakistan and the Netherlands crushes the defending champions, India, by a miraculous margin.

Group B Super 8 Qualification Scenario after back-to-back defeats for Australia

Probably, the most surprising qualification scenario in this edition of the T20 World Cup. Zimbabwe have led a major upset against Australia, and hence, the African side can advance to the next stage of the tournament. Surprises are common in the ICC T20 World Cup, as the USA and Afghanistan had advanced into the Super-8 last time, replacing Pakistan and New Zealand.

This time, with Sri Lanka having qualified already, Zimbabwe has a fair chance to make it through to the Super-8s with a win against Ireland. Australia's only chance would arise if Zimbabwe lost against Ireland and Sri Lanka, and they could win by a huge margin against a weakened Oman side. However, as of now, it seems this is the end of the campaign for the Australian side. For Ireland to qualify, the other two teams, Australia and Zimbabwe, will have to lose all of their final games in the group stage.

Group C Super 8 Qualification Scenario

The West Indies and England are through to the Super-8s, with Scotland, Italy and Nepal all snubbed from the season, with several losses.

Group D Super 8 Qualification Scenario

The most competitive group in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which saw some of the toughest-fought games between New Zealand, South Africa and Afghanistan. As of now, it seems imminent that New Zealand can qualify as the second team, as their final game is scheduled to be played against Canada.

Even if they lose to Canada, they can qualify further with Afghanistan or the UAE losing their last group games, or they can manage to win but cannot have enough margins to take them past the Blackcaps' scores.

Canada would have to win all of their remaining games, and so would Afghanistan and the UAE. Afghanistan's qualification chances can be given a shot only if New Zealand loses to Canada, which seems an impossible scenario.
