Australia National Cricket Team head coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed that his team will not play a warm-up match before the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India next year. Instead, the visitors plan to focus on a specialized preparation camp designed to replicate Indian conditions ahead of the series.
The decision comes as Australia gear up for their longest Test tour of India in nearly five decades. With the first Test scheduled to begin less than two weeks after the conclusion of the home series against New Zealand, Andrew McDonald believes a dedicated training camp will offer better preparation than a conventional practice game.

Australia have adopted a different approach to preparing for overseas Test tours in recent years, and Andrew McDonald indicated that strategy will continue for the 2027 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Rather than playing a first-class warm-up fixture against local opposition, Australia are evaluating venues for a pre-series training camp where players can acclimatize to Indian conditions. Similar camps were held in Dubai before the 2025 Sri Lanka tour and in Bengaluru ahead of the 2023 India series.
Speaking about the plans, McDonald explained that the emphasis would be on quality preparation instead of match practice.
"We feel as though we've got enough time to immerse ourselves in those conditions. We won't be taking on a practice game. It'll just be more around the location," he said as quoted by Cricket.com.au.
"We've got a couple of options there. We have gone to the UAE previously and we have also gone into India last time into Bangalore, so we're just working through what that would look like in terms of how we then manage the individuals.
Andrew McDonald added that Australia's plans will depend on how the four-Test home series against New Zealand unfolds. Some players expected to feature in India may not necessarily be involved in every home Test and could instead begin preparing earlier for the subcontinent, even if it means missing the Big Bash League.
He also revealed that Australia are looking at recreating Indian-style pitches in training to better prepare themselves to encounter surfaces during the series.

While Australia have decided against a warm-up game before the India tour, Andrew McDonald clarified that the team is not opposed to practice matches altogether.
Australia are scheduled to play tour matches before their Test series in South Africa and England, with the England Lions fixture depending on whether Australia qualify for the 2027 ICC World Test Championship final. Explaining the reasoning behind the differing approaches, Andrew McDonald said:
"We don't always take the opportunity to play warm-up games or first-class games on the entry, and that's probably because we haven't traditionally had the space and time, and also we've had an experienced group.
"Some players are going to be coming out of IPL, some players are going to be coming out of April, May in Australia preparing back here, some might be in county cricket, so we're going to have players at all different stages of prep.
"Our intention is that we qualify for the World Test Championship final, but there's a lot of water to go under the bridge there. To have that game available to finish off the prep for players, if we weren't to make the WTC final, would be important.
"We're not against practice games as long as they can fit in. That's always the hard part with a schedule that does get compressed. We feel like a game on a Test venue against a quality opponent potentially is the best thing for that (UK) tour."
Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2027 full schedule and dates
The 2027 Border-Gavaskar Trophy will begin with the first Test in Nagpur from January 21 to January 25. The action will then move to Chennai, which will host the second Test from January 29 to February 2.
The third Test will be played in Guwahati from February 11 to February 15, followed by the fourth Test in Ranchi from February 19 to February 23. The five-match series will conclude with the fifth and final Test in Ahmedabad from February 27 to March 3.
The series is expected to be one of the marquee contests of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle. With Australia looking to end their long wait for a Test series win in India and the hosts aiming to continue their dominance at home, the five-Test contest could have a major impact on the race to the World Test Championship final.
