The tour was confirmed by the host board Cricket West Indies (CWI). The series will begin at the iconic Kensington Oval in Barbados where the first Test will be held from June 25. Grenada's St. George's will host the second Test from July 3.
The Test series will conclude at Kingston, Jamaica where the third and final Test will be played from July 12. The last time these two teams played each other in a Test series in West Indies was in 2015 when Australia won the two-match Test series 2-0.
After the Test series, both the teams will against play each other in five T20Is. Jamaica, which will be the host of the third Test, will be host the first two T20Is as well. The last three T20Is will be played at St. Kitts.
The tour was earlier supposed to be of two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is when the current Future Tours Programme (FTP) was released in 2022. However, since the next ODI World Cup is in 2027, both the boards agreed to remove the ODIs and play more Tests and T20Is.
Why was the schedule changed?
The CEO of CA Nick Hockley had already called for a three-match Test series earlier after the last series between these two teams produced a thrilling contest. These two teams played each other in a Test series in Australia last time when the two-match Test series ended 1-1.
The Aussies won the first Test convincingly while West Indies won the second Test at Gabba in a thrilling fashion on the back of Shamar Joseph's superlative exploits. The decision to add extra T20Is was taken with the T20 World Cup 2026 in mind.
"Australia and the West Indies share a rich history, and we're delighted the Test series has been expanded to three matches. The series will start the next World Test Championship cycle and, as we saw last summer, we will have to be at our best to retain the Frank Worrell Trophy," CA's general manager Ben Oliver said.
"The additional T20 matches against a dynamic West Indies team will also provide a great opportunity to progress our preparation for the next T20 World Cup which is now only 12 months away," he added.

AUS vs WI head-to-head in Tests
Australia have been the far dominant team in Tests against West Indies. Both the teams have played 105 Tests against each other in which Australia have won 50 while West Indies have emerged victorious in 31 matches.
Before the Gabba Test in 2024, West Indies had won just once in 30 Tests since the start of this century. However, since the West Indies Test team is on the rise, this series promises to be a tight one.
