Australian speedster James Pattinson has shocked the cricketing world by announcing his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the marquee Ashes 2021-22 series.

Pattinson is 31-year-old and he was doing good for Australia in the longest format of the game. However, he has decided to say goodbye to Test cricket and the main reason behind this is the knee injury he has concussed. Pattinson has been struggling with knee problems for quite some time now and he has lost the motivation to get himself up for another run in Test cricket.

James Pattinson has been one of the finest in his field and he made his debut for Australia in 2011 and made a big impact in his debut match by picking a 5-wicket haul and after that, he had a very good run in cricket as well. However, the constant run-ins with the injury led to him not getting massive success in Test cricket.

Other than this the emergence of the deadly Australian pace trio of Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc led to him not getting a permanent slot in the playing XI.

Talking about numbers James Pattinson bagged 81 wickets in 21 Test games at an economy of 3.22 and average of 26.3, he was able to pick four five-wicket hauls in his career. He has played 15 ODIs scalping 16 wickets at an economy of 5.62 and an average of 42.6 and Pattinson has also been part of 4 T20 International games where he picked 3 wickets.

In the recent interaction with Cricket Australia’s website James Pattinson stated:

The hardest part as you get older is that you want to try and enjoy your cricket as well. You put all your attention into playing cricket for Australia and at some stage, that finishes,”

With Pattinson parting ways with Test cricket Australia National Cricket Selectors will have to find a good replacement for him for the upcoming Ashes 2021-22 series. So Michael Neser, Sean Abbott and Mark Steketee are most likely to get their name in the squad of the Ashes series.
