Defending champions Australia have announced their squad for the upcoming ICC Women's World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka, as they hand maiden World Cup caps to four players while including previously injured spinner Sophie Molineux in the squad.
Ahead of the upcoming ICC Women's World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, defending champions Australia, who won their 7th title back in 2022, have announced their squad. The Aussie women's squad has been bolstered by the return of several players.
The Aussies will be defending their title from 2022 in the upcoming World Cup and will begin their title defence against New Zealand on October 1st in Indore.
Sophie Molineux makes a return for the World Cups post-injury
Left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux returns to the Australia squad after an injury layoff, which will start on the 30th of September. Molineux underwent knee surgery, missing much of the past year, but was a major spin option within the side.
Though the spinner is likely to miss the preparatory series against India ahead of the World Cup, she will be ready for the showpiece event that follows the bilateral. Australia's campaign has marked positive signs with the return of Darcie Brown and Georgia Wareham.
"Sophie Molineux is progressing well in her return from a knee injury, and we anticipate she'll be available for the World Cup," Australia team physio Kate Beerworth said. "Alyssa Healy made a strong return in the recent 'A' series, and we're pleased with where she's at, with Georgia Wareham also back to full training following her adductor injury during the Hundred."
Former Australian skipper, opening batter and wicket-keeper batsman Alyssa Healy also recently made a comprehensive return with Australia A against India A last month after being ruled out for the entire summer of 2024-25.
Aussie women's maiden World Cup call for 5 players
Sophie Molineux is among the 5 players in the Australian women's squad named for the World Cup who have been picked for their maiden ODI World Cup. The list includes youngsters Kim Garth and Georgia Voll, and other big names like Phoebe Litchfield, Georgia Wareham, and Molineux herself as well.
Sophie Molineux's return would bolster the spin attack of the Australians alongside Wareham, Ashleigh Gardner, and Alana King.
"We've looked to cover all bases, especially with conditions in India and Sri Lanka likely to assist spin. Sophie's [Molineux] progress has been encouraging, and we're confident she'll be ready to go by the time the tournament starts," National selector Shawn Flegler said.
