Mumbai opener and newly appointed vice-captain Ayush Mhatre underwent surgery for a Grade 4 tear in his right hamstring on Thursday. The 19-year-old suffered a recurrence of the injury during Mumbai's opening match of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium.

Mhatre had enjoyed a promising run in 2026, leading India to the Under-19 World Cup title before impressing for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026. However, recurring hamstring injuries have disrupted his progress, with the latest setback threatening to end his domestic season.

Ayush Mhatre Faces Four-Month Layoff After Hamstring Surgery

According to a report by the Times of India (TOI), Ayush Mhatre will remain out of action for around four months and is unlikely to feature for Mumbai for the rest of the domestic season. Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala performed the 90-minute surgery at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.

The sports orthopaedic surgeon has treated several prominent Indian cricketers, including Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja. He has also helped Olympic medallists Neeraj Chopra, Vinesh Phogat and PV Sindhu recover from injuries.

"Ayush underwent a 90-minute surgery for 'Hamstring Grade 4 tear repair,' for a recurrent injury on right hamstring. He was operated upon by Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala. He is comfortable and walking. He will be discharged today evening," the source told TOI.

"He will be out of action for four months," the source added.

Ayush Mhatre Suffers Injury During Ranji Trophy Return

Ayush Mhatre suffered the injury while running between the wickets on the opening day of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy match against Chandigarh. He was batting on 48 when his right hamstring gave way, forcing him to miss the remainder of the contest.

Mumbai went on to win the match by an innings and 155 runs. After posting 429 in their first innings, they dismissed Chandigarh twice to secure a dominant victory at the Wankhede Stadium.

The injury also puts Mhatre's participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scheduled to begin on December 14, in serious doubt. The four-month recovery timeline makes his participation in the tournament unlikely.

The teenager captained India to the Under-19 World Cup title in Zimbabwe in January and February before joining Chennai Super Kings for the IPL 2026 season.

How Recurrent Hamstring Injuries Disrupted Ayush Mhatre's 2026 Season

Ayush Mhatre first suffered a left hamstring injury on April 18 during Chennai Super Kings' IPL match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The injury occurred while he was running between the wickets and forced him to leave the tournament midway through the campaign.

Despite beginning the IPL season with a duck, Mhatre established himself as CSK's leading run-scorer. Batting at No. 3, he scored 201 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 177.87, including two half-centuries.

The initial injury also ruled him out of the T20 Mumbai tournament in June, the India A tour of Sri Lanka and the Duleep Trophy in August. He subsequently spent nearly three months undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where he received treatment for injuries.

A subsequent problem with his right hamstring delayed his return to competitive cricket. His comeback in the Ranji Trophy ultimately ended with another serious tear, leaving the young batter facing an extended recovery period.
