Babar Azam was one of the biggest talking points of the Big Bash League (BBL) after the Sydney Sixers signed him for the 2025–26 season. However, Babar Azam failed to live up to the hype and ended up being trolled by the organizers themselves following his flop BBL debut.

With his reputation as one of Pakistan’s top batters, expectations were naturally very high when Babar turned up for the Sydney Sixers against the Perth Scorchers at Perth Stadium in Perth on Sunday, December 14. Notably, rain reduced the Big Bash League 2025-26 contest to an 11-over game.

Babar Azam fails to fire on BBL debut

Well, the former Pakistan captain’s much-awaited debut did not go the way he or his fans would have hoped. Babar struggled to settle at the crease. He looked cautious from the start and took time to get used to the pace and bounce at the Optus Stadium.

Even Babar had a lucky moment when the ball dropped safely between mid-on and mid-wicket, giving him a brief lifeline. That escape did not last long. After finally opening his account by pushing the ball over the infield, he fell on the second-to-last ball of the third over.

On the second-to-last ball of the third over, Perth Scorchers fast bowler Brody Couch bowled a hard-length delivery. Babar tried to hit the ball over mid-on but failed to time it properly. The ball came off the splice of the bat and went straight up in the air, and Laurie Evans took the brilliant catch to end Babar's stay in Perth.

Big Bash League trolls Babar after his disappointing debut

Babar’s innings ended with just two runs from five balls, leaving his team and the BBL disappointed. At that stage, the Sydney Sixers were already in trouble. Daniel Hughes had been dismissed early, and the team was struggling at 15 for two in 2.5 overs against the Scorchers.

Soon after his dismissal, the Big Bash League’s official social media account shared a video highlighting Babar’s first ball in the tournament, which many felt was a cheeky dig at the Pakistani star. They captioned the post: “Babar Azam's first ball in the Big Bash is a dot!”

While fans trolled Babar heavily over his failed BBL debut, many felt the post was unnecessary and poorly timed. The clip quickly went viral, and Babar became a target for online trolling.

Pakistan’s big names set to shine in BBL 2025-26

Meanwhile, Babar Azam is not the only Pakistani player fans will be watching in the ongoing Big Bash League 2025-26. Several other big names from Pakistan are also set to be seen in action in this season. Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan, and Hasan Ali will all turn out for their respective teams in the ongoing BBL 2025-26.

On Monday, December 15, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi will go head-to-head when the Melbourne Renegades face the Brisbane Heat at Simonds Stadium in Geelong. On the other hand, Haris Rauf will turn up for the Melbourne Stars, Shadab Khan joined the Sydney Thunder, and Hasan Ali will represent the Adelaide Strikers in the ongoing Big Bash League.
