Pakistan cricket has been rocked by a shocking controversy as young batter Haider Ali was arrested in England over a rape allegation during the Pakistan Shaheens’ ongoing tour of the United Kingdom.

The 24-year-old has already been provisionally suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) following his arrest over an alleged rape case in Manchester. The shocking incident unfolded during the Pakistan Shaheens’ tour, featuring red-ball and white-ball matches in England.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) launched a probe, but they didn’t reveal the suspect’s identity due to legal norms, but Telecom Asia Sports and other sources have identified Haider Ali as the individual taken into custody in the rape case.

The man was reportedly arrested at Beckenham, where the Shaheens were playing a match against MCSAC. Authorities have reportedly seized Haider’s passport before releasing him on bail, but the legal proceedings are far from over.

Is the victim Pakistani? PCB promises full support

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said in a statement, “We have arrested a 24-year-old man. It’s alleged that the incident occurred on Wednesday, 23 July 2025, at a premises in Manchester. The man has since been bailed pending further inquiries.”

A source was quoted as saying by Telecom Asia Sports, “It’s apparently a rape case against a girl of Pakistani origin.” On the other hand, the Pakistan Cricket Board sources revealed that the board is aware of the situation and has initiated its own inquiry and promised to cooperate with the UK authorities.

The PCB, upon learning of the incident, immediately suspended Haider Ali from all cricketing activities. While assuring cooperation with UK authorities, the PCB also extended legal support to the young cricketer during the proceedings.

Haider Ali's future hangs by a thread

Well, the Pakistan Shaheens’ tour, which ended on August 6, included two drawn three-day matches and a 2-1 win in the one-day series. Most of the squad has returned to Pakistan, but Captain Saud Shakeel and Haider Ali have stayed back, hinting at Haider’s reported arrest.

The young batter’s career has been a rollercoaster since his international debut in 2020. He has played only 2 ODIs and 35 T20Is for Pakistan so far. Haider’s journey has been marred by controversies, including a previous suspension for violating Covid-19 protocols during the 2021 Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Now, with a criminal case looming, Haider’s future in cricket hangs by a thread. This case raised tough questions for the PCB and put the spotlight once again on the conduct and discipline of players off the field.
