Pakistani spinner Sajid Khan sparked a social media debate after making a bold statement about his life choices. In a recent interview, the Pakistani off-spinner said that if he hadn’t become a professional cricketer, he likely would have ended up as a gangster, and it grabbed the attention of cricket fans.
Sajid Khan has secured his place in Pakistan’s Test setup with consistent performances. He is one of the country’s standout spinners over the past decade. The 31-year-old cricketer's impactful bowling played a crucial role in Pakistan’s Test series win against England under Shan Masood’s captaincy last year.
I Would Have Been a Gangster - Sajid Khan
In a rapid-fire interview with ARY News, Sajid was asked a series of fun “what if” questions. Things took a surprising turn when he was asked what career he might have pursued if cricket hadn’t worked out. Sajid responded without hesitation that he would have been a gangster.
The ARY News Channel host asked Sajid Khan, "Agar aap cricketer na hote toh kya hote? (If you were not a cricketer, what would you have been?"
To this, Sajid Khan replied, "Main gangster hota. (I would have been a gangster.)"
The host laughed off Khan’s unexpected remark and said, "Ye persona aap leke chal rahe hai. (You are carrying on with this persona.)"
Sajid Khan Calls Babar Azam the Best Player in the World
Not all of Sajid’s answers caused controversies. When asked about fellow cricketers, he was full of praise and called Babar Azam “the best player in the world.” He also labeled Virat Kohli “the best Indian player ever.”
It’s rare to hear an international cricketer openly say he might have ended up in a life of crime if not for the game.
The comment triggered a wave of mixed reactions online. While some laughed it off as a joke, others criticized it harshly, labeling the comment “irresponsible” and “shocking” coming from a national sports figure.
Sajid Khan Has Become a Regular Member of Pakistan’s Test Setup
Sajid has become a regular member of Pakistan’s Test setup. He has taken 59 wickets in just 12 Test matches at an average of 27.28 and an economy of 3.42, including four five-wicket hauls.
He played a pivotal role during Pakistan’s series against England last year. After a loss in the first Test, Sajid was brought in for the remaining two matches. With spinning tracks prepared to suit his style, Pakistan turned things around and clinched the series 2-1.
Sajid was last seen in action during the two-match Test series against the West Indies, where he picked up 15 wickets. However, the series ended in a 1-1 draw after Pakistan lost the second match. He drew attention by pulling off a John Cena-style gesture in the second Test against the West Indies.
Sajid made his Test debut back in 2021 against Zimbabwe in Harare, and he went wicketless in his first outing.
