Bangladesh have suffered a huge blow on the very first day of the Asia Cup. The three-time finalists will be without their opener and star batsman Litton Das for the continental championship. The wicketkeeper-batsman has been ruled out of the whole competition.

The right-handed batsman did not travel to Sri Lanka with his team after failing to recover from a viral fever. He has been replaced by wicketkeeper-batsman Anamul Haque Bijoy in the Bangladesh squad. Anamul will join the rest of the Bangladesh squad in Sri Lanka on Wednesday (August 30).

“He (Anamul) has been in the runs in domestic cricket and we have continued to monitor him in the Bangladesh Tigers programme. He was always in our consideration,” said Minhajul Abedin, the chairman of Bangladesh’s National Selection Panel.

“Due to Litton’s unavailability, we needed a top-order batter who could keep wicket and Anamul got the nod,” he added.

Litton Das adds to Bangladesh’s woes:

Litton Das is not the first big name for Bangladesh who will miss the Asia Cup. Before him, two key players of the team – Tamim Iqbal and Ebadot Hossain – have also been ruled out of the tournament. While Tamim is out with a back injury, Hossain is out with a knee issue.

Hossain sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during the ODI series against Afghanistan last month. He has been replaced by 20-year-old uncapped pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib in the Bangladesh squad. While both Tamim and Litton Das are set to return to action when Bangladesh host New Zealand for an ODI series in September just ahead of the World Cup, Hossain is set for a lengthy spell.

Bangladesh will begin their Asia Cup campaign against tournament co-hosts Sri Lanka on 31 August, in Pallekele. The Tigers will be led by veteran allrounder Shakib Al Hasan.
