Bangladesh Women lost 5 wickets in the last nine balls as they lost against Sri Lanka by 7 runs after 12 runs were needed in 2 overs with 6 wickets in hand. Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu led from the front with 3 wickets in the 50th over of the match.
The Sri Lanka Women vs Bangladesh Women match in the ICC Women's World Cup marked the most devastating batting collapse in the history of the game. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh both had some terrible downfalls, but it cost the most to Bangladesh, as their fallout led to a defeat in the game.
Sri Lanka are the co-hosts of the World Cup and they are hosting all their matches in the island nation, alongside the matches of the Pakistan women. This win marked the first win of the World Cup for the Lankan women.
Bangladesh spinners dominate as Sri Lanka were bowled out before 50 overs
Sri Lanka didn't have the best of starts to their innings, as Marifa Akter delivered the breakthrough in the very first ball of the game. After Vishmi Gunaratne's wicket, the Lankan batters Chamari Athapaththu and Hasini Perera scored runs with ease and gave Sri Lanka a promising start.
The skipper scored 46 off 43 balls before being dismissed by Rabeya Khan, and Shorna Akter dismissed Hasini Perera, who reached her maiden international half-century in her 143rd game. She knocked at the doors of a ton but fell to Shorna for 85.
Athapaththu completed a milestone of 4000 International runs in ODIs, while the half-centurion also reached a milestone of 1000 runs. After this, Lankan women were architects of their own collapse while Shorna Akter ran through the Lankan middle order. After Nilakshi de Silva's dismissal, the Sri Lankan women could only manage to score 28 runs off their last 103 balls and saw six wickets fall.
Bangladesh built on a safe chase until the 48th over under Nigar Sultana's presence
The Bangladesh innings might not have had a promising start with the fall of 3 early wickets, but Nigar Sultana, the skipper, if not comprehensively, still safely guided the Tigresses towards the target. Sultana top-scored with a well-made 77 off 98 and was backed by Sharmin Akhter, who scored an unbeaten 64* off 103 balls.
These runs came as a part of major partnerships between Sultana and Sharmin Akhter off 82 runs and later with Shorna Akter off 50 runs. However, the Bangladesh ship wasn't moving as swiftly as it could, and due to this overcautiousness, they collapsed in the dying moments of the game.
Sri Lanka stun Bangladesh with team hat-trick in match-turning final over of Women's World Cup
The Women's World Cup had lacked a promising band of thrilling finishes; however, in the last two games of the World Cup, there have been two breathtaking contests, first between India and England and then in the match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
While chasing 203 runs total, Bangladesh collapsed from 191/4 in 48 overs to 195/9 in their 50 overs. In a tantalizing final dash, the Lankan women picked 5 wickets in the last two overs, of which 4 came alone in the first four balls of Chamari Athapaththu's final over of the match.
It marked a team hat-trick with a run-out preventing Athapaththu's hat-trick, as she finished with the figures of 4/42. The team's hat trick had left the Bangladesh women helpless, as they are now officially eliminated from the race for the World Cup semi-final.
