A massive update from the Bangladesh cricket circle: their cricket board, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has approved a new domestic tournament structure covering all three formats. The newly approved tournament will have First Class (four-day), List A One-Day, and List A T20 formats under a single umbrella.
This decision has taken weeks after snubbing the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) from its calendar. The Tamim Iqbal-led cricket board put its top T20 league on hold because of financial reasons. During the finalization of the new tournament, BCB took care of the financial aspects as well.
The leading corporates in Bangladesh will be the owners
As per media reports, the ownership of the teams of the league will be in the hands of the nation's leading corporates. Initially, the duration of the ownership of each team will be three years.
Through the league and the different formats, BCB will be able to provide a large group of its own talents with a proper stage, where they can show their potential and skills.
“The Board agreed in principle to introduce a six-team domestic competition structure covering three formats - First Class (four-day), List A One-Day and List A T20 - under a single competition framework,” the BCB said in a press release.
"Under the proposed structure, team ownership rights will be offered to established and reputed corporate and financial institutions in Bangladesh for an initial period of three years. The Board noted that the T20 competition will be the first event under the new structure, with a tentative window in December 2026,” it added.
Why has BCB announced the new domestic tournament?
The tournament will also help the players in securing their income. Previously, BCB, in one of its press conferences, expressed its concerns over its domestic cricket income, which took a hit after the snubbing of BPL. The BPL used to be home to a large part of the nation's cricket talent, who were not part of the national team in any format.
The league will not only work as the replacement for the BPL, but is also expected to strengthen the all-over talent pool, which eventually could become a supply chain leading to the national side.
BCB approved a newly framed payment structure
Keeping the domestic cricketers' financial aspects in mind, BCB has framed a renewed financial structure as well, based on the formats. According to the latest pay scales, men's players will receive Tk 1.5 lakh per match in four-day cricket, Tk 1 lakh for One-Day cricket and Tk 80,000 for T20 cricket, and in the National Cricket League 2nd XI, players will receive Tk 15,000 per match.
Women's cricketers will also receive their payments under a lucrative payment structure. According to media reports, the women's cricketers in Bangladesh will get Tk 40,000 for three-day cricket, Tk 30,000 for One-Day cricket, and Tk 20,000 for T20 cricket.
Tamim Iqbal and his cricket governing board also officially approved increasing payments for the U-19 talents. Bangladesh Under-19 team will receive Tk 20,000 as their daily allowance.
