On Wednesday, June 4, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced a 16-member squad of the Bangladesh National Cricket Team for the upcoming Test series against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team.
The fate of Najmul Hossain Shanto has also been sealed with the Test squad announcement for the first campaign of Team Bangladesh in the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
Najmul Hossain Shanto retained as the red-ball skipper
Shanto's tenure as the skipper has been filled with some notable achievements and significant controversies. He had earlier expressed his desire to step down as captain and told the BCB that he had made the decision considering the mental strain and his own dip in form.
Despite him not wanting to remain at the helm, a mutual agreement seems to have been made between the board and the cricketer, as Najmul Hossain Shanto has been retained as the Test captain of the Bangla Tigers.
He will continue as the captain for one more year, and all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz will provide him with support as he will also continue as the vice-captain.
"Top-order batter Najmul Hossain Shanto has been retained as Bangladesh's Test captain for another year, continuing in the leadership role he assumed in 2024. All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz also continues as the vice-captain, maintaining the leadership pairing that led the team in the previous season," BCB said in a statement on Wednesday while announcing the Test squad.

Fast bowlers Ebadot Hossain and Nahid Rana have been recalled for the matches against the Sri Lankan team with the former making a comeback after a long time as he was last seen in action in the international arena in July 2023. Left-arm spinner Hasan Murad has also been added to the squad.
Speaking of the changes in the Bangladesh Test squad from their previous series against Zimbabwe, left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam, pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib, and opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy have been axed.
Meanwhile, the first Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be hosted by Galle from June 17, and the second Test will be held in Colombo from June 25. The Bangla Tigers will be leaving for Sri Lanka on June 13 to start their preparations.
