A surprising moment at the toss quickly exploded into a full-blown controversy at the ongoing ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026, forcing the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) into urgent damage-control mode as pressure mounted from all sides, seemingly including the BCCI as well.
No handshake at toss moment sparks big storm at ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026
Before the group match between India U19 and Bangladesh U19 in Bulawayo, the captains Ayush Mhatre and Zawad Abrar walked in for the toss, but there was no handshake. With behavior and sportsmanship are being closely watched at the global stage, this move instantly raised eyebrows, especially given the ongoing tense situation between India and Bangladesh.
India later won the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026 group match by 18 runs against Bangladesh via the DLS method. Interestingly, players from both teams did shake hands after the match in Bulawayo, but by then the damage was already done. No handshake at the toss had already triggered strong reactions online and within cricket boards.
BCB explains what went wrong at the toss
As questions grew louder, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) released a clarification to explain what had actually happened. The board said that regular captain Azizul Hakim was ill and could not come for the toss at the last moment, and the vice-captain, Zawad Abrar, had to step in.
In that brief moment, the usual handshake was missed, as BCB insisted that it was a simple mistake, not planned, and not meant to disrespect India in any way. However, the BCCI is yet to react to the matter. However, the BCB also made it clear that it took the issue seriously.
The statement reads, “The BCB wishes to clarify that the absence of a handshake with the opposition captain was completely unintentional and resulted from a momentary lapse in concentration. There was no intent whatsoever to show discourtesy or disregard towards the opposition.”
Players reminded of responsibility and sportsmanship
The team management was immediately spoken to, and the players were reminded that showing respect to opponents is extremely important, especially when representing the country on a world stage. The board stressed that good behavior, respect, and sportsmanship are basic requirements for anyone playing for Bangladesh.

The BCB further stated, “The Board has viewed the matter with due seriousness, as upholding the spirit of cricket and respect for opponents is a fundamental prerequisite for representing Bangladesh at any level, and immediately advised the team management accordingly.
The players have also been reminded of their responsibility to maintain the highest standards of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and mutual respect in all interactions with opposing teams. The Bangladesh Cricket Board remains fully committed to the values of cricket, both on and off the field.”

Tensions already high between India and Bangladesh
This incident comes at a time when handshakes have already become a sensitive issue. Matches involving India and Pakistan in several tournaments have seen similar scenes, with no handshakes before and after the games due to political tensions after the Pahalgam attack.
At the same time, relations between India and Bangladesh have also been under strain. Recently, the BCCI asked the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad.
In response, the Bangladesh government banned IPL in the country till further notice, and the BCB refused to send its team to India for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 with issue yet to be solved.
