BCCI Awaits General Election Dates Before Finalizing IPL 2024 Schedule - Reports

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 faces a significant scheduling challenge as it might clash with the general elections. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) needs to conclude the IPL in time to have enough time for players before the T20 World Cup 2024.

The BCCI is currently awaiting the Election Commission of India’s announcement of the polling schedule for the General Elections 2024 before finalizing the IPL schedule. Recent reports suggest a potential venue change, possibly moving the league outside of India.

IPL Governing Council To Wait For General Elections Schedule

As per MyKhel, the IPL Governing Council will make the decision on whether to stage the tournament entirely in India or shift it overseas based on the announced election dates. Senior BCCI officials and franchise representatives were involved in the meeting in New Delhi.

The IPL has previously encountered scheduling challenges during general elections in 2009, 2014, and 2019. In response, the event was moved entirely to South Africa for the second edition, and the first half of the seventh edition was held in the United Arab Emirates.

During the IPL 2019, the organizers initially released the schedule for the first 19 matches, and the remaining games were adjusted based on local authorities and polling dates. The board effectively managed the T20 competition without shifting to overseas venues.

IPL 2024 Schedule Plays Crucial Role In Auction Strategies

The possibility of IPL 2024 being hosted overseas may prompt franchises to adjust their strategies for the upcoming mini-auction. Potential alternative hosting nations, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and South Africa, offer diverse conditions compared to India.

The IPL schedule is anticipated to be revealed next year, contingent on the announcement of election dates, presenting a challenging situation for the franchises. The tournament needs to start early, with a substantial number of matches before the commencement of polling.

The IPL auction is set to take place on December 19 at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, marking the first time the event will be held outside India. Several franchises have already taken significant steps in team composition during the trade window for the upcoming season.
