The BCCI has summoned head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman for a review meeting. Board secretary Devajit Saikia has called the key officials to the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday to discuss India’s recent struggles and future plans.
Team India endured a poor run in their recent overseas T20I matches, losing the series against Ireland 2-0 before England completed a 4-0 whitewash. The team struggled across both tours, failing to win any of their six matches while their batting and bowling units produced inconsistent performances.
BCCI Set to Review India’s Poor Overseas Run
According to The Indian Express, the board will review India’s recent results in Ireland and England during its meeting in Mumbai on Thursday, September 3. The meeting was initially expected in July after India suffered consecutive T20I series defeats but was delayed.
India lost the two-match T20I series against Ireland 2-0 in June, ending their 16-series unbeaten run that had lasted nearly three years. The team then endured an even tougher tour of England, losing the five-match T20I series 4-0.
With India scheduled to tour New Zealand later this year, the board will also discuss its plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The board wants the team management, selectors, and Centre of Excellence (CoE) to work together as India builds towards the next World Cup cycle.
Injury Management Comes Under BCCI Scanner
Player fitness and injury management will be another major focus of the meeting. The Centre of Excellence (CoE) has faced criticism after several players suffered setbacks before important tours, with communication gaps reported between the medical team, players and the selection committee.
There have been concerns over cases involving Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar and Sai Sudharsan. The selection committee was reportedly not informed about Bumrah’s fitness status before a tour. Washington was also ruled out, while Sudharsan took longer than expected to recover from his injury.
The BCCI will also examine how player workloads affect fitness. India’s squad for the Afghanistan T20I series already has four players whose participation depends on fitness clearance. Bumrah, Washington, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana are scheduled to undergo fitness tests on September 9.
Ajit Agarkar’s Future and Hardik Pandya’s Fitness on Agenda
The meeting also comes at an important point for chief selector Ajit Agarkar. His tenure as chairman of the men’s senior selection committee is set to end in September, but the BCCI has not yet confirmed whether he will receive an extension through the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Hardik Pandya’s fitness will also feature in the discussions. The all-rounder remains an important part of India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup, but his bowling workload continues to be a concern. He is currently unable to bowl more than five or six overs in an ODI.
The BCCI, team management and CoE will assess how to manage Hardik’s return while keeping other key players fit. India will begin the Afghanistan T20I series on September 13, with the remaining matches scheduled for September 15 and 17. All three games will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
