BCCI Considering To Launch T10 League Similar To IPL In 2024 - Reports

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is exploring the prospect of introducing a Tier-2 cricket league, drawing inspiration from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The BCCI is considering launching the tournament in 2024, and it is set to be played in the T10 format.
The plan is still in its early stages, but it has received an early vote of confidence from stakeholders and potential sponsors. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah is actively working on the details, with the board identifying the September-October window for its potential launch.
BCCI To Host T10 League During September-October Window
As per a report by Moneycontrol, the BCCI is inspired by the success of the IPL, which has transformed cricket since its inception in 2008. People familiar with the developments believe that adopting the T10 format could further elevate the sport’s popularity in India.
The report also mentioned that the board is addressing various concerns related to the potential introduction of a new league, encompassing issues such as the format and other factors impacting the IPL.
A) Should they go ahead with the idea of a T10 league or stick to T20 (the current proposal, though, is for T10)?
B) Should the league have an age cap for the players so that the new property doesn’t eat into the popularity of the IPL?
C) Should the franchises for this new league be sold through a separate tender process or can the existing IPL franchises be given the right of first refusal (there’s a mention of it in the existing contracts)?
D) Should the proposed tournament be played in India or have a new venue every year?
It Could Signal The Death Of 50-over Cricket – Report
A clause in the contracts between the BCCI and IPL franchises grants the franchises the right of first refusal for any business model deemed ‘similar’ to the IPL. Sources suggest that the BCCI will honor this clause before making any final decisions.
“Whenever the BCCI decides to launch a new property, points A and C will always continue to remain the same given that cricket sells like no other product in India. It is point b that the BCCI might want to think twice about,” say those tracking developments.
The dominance of franchise cricket over bilateral cricket is seen as inevitable due to recent trends. Apart from ICC events and select marquee series, other international engagements struggle to compete with the widespread popularity of franchise cricket worldwide.
“A potential revenue-sharing model with the BCCI could help these boards on the financial front. But if that happens, it could signal the death of 50-over cricket sooner than one thinks,” say those fearing the ‘inevitable’.
