Speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma retirement intensified over the last 24 hours after multiple reports claimed the third ODI against England at Lord's could be the veteran opener's final appearance for India. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now firmly denied those claims, insisting there has been no discussion about the 39-year-old playing his last ODI on Sunday.

The rumours gathered momentum following reports from The Indian Express, PTI and IANS suggesting Rohit was no longer part of India's long-term ODI plans beyond the ongoing England series. While those reports triggered widespread debate over Rohit's future, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has publicly dismissed the speculation.

Reports claimed Lord's ODI to be Rohit Sharma's farewell game

The Rohit Sharma retirement news cycle began with a report by The Indian Express, which claimed the third ODI at Lord's could be Rohit Sharma's final match in Indian colours. According to the report, the BCCI's senior selection committee had informed the former captain that he was not part of their plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

It also claimed head coach Gautam Gambhir was involved in discussions with Rohit before the England ODI series. An unnamed BCCI source quoted in the report said Rohit wanted to continue playing after improving his fitness, but selectors had decided to move on while leaving the final retirement decision to the batter himself. The report also stated that youngsters such as Yashasvi Jaiswal were expected to receive extended opportunities in the ODI setup going forward.

PTI later carried a similar report, albeit with more caution. It claimed the Lord's ODI Rohit plays on Sunday could potentially be his last international match because selectors were unlikely to retain him beyond the England tour. The report also highlighted Rohit's recent ODI returns, 241 runs in his previous eight innings at an average of just over 30, while noting that Virat Kohli reportedly remained in the selectors' plans because of his fitness and performances.

IANS echoed the same broad narrative, reporting that Rohit was not expected to feature in India's plans after the England series and that Lord's was being viewed as his likely farewell.

Reports claimed Yashasvi Jaiswal is locked in as Rohit Sharma's replacement

A common thread running through the various reports was the selectors' reported desire to begin planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup with a younger batting core.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is among the players the selectors want to invest in over the coming months, with the left-handed opener reportedly viewed as a long-term option at the top of the order.

The reports suggested that moving beyond Rohit Sharma would create opportunities for younger players to establish themselves well before the next 50-over World Cup. However, none of the reports indicated that a final decision had been officially communicated by the BCCI

"Lord's ODI won't be his last match": BCCI on Rohit Sharma

Amid the growing speculation, BCCI's stance on Rohit Sharma retirement finally became clear after secretary Devajit Saikia categorically rejected the reports.

"There are lot of speculations going on in media about Rohit Sharma's future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord's on Sunday. Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, Lord's ODI won't be his last match," Saikia told PTI in an exclusive interaction.

The statement effectively distances the board from the reports that had described the Rohit last ODI as a foregone conclusion. While Saikia did not directly address the claims about the selectors' long-term plans, his comments made it clear that there has been no official decision declaring the Lord's fixture as Rohit's farewell appearance.

Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin defended Rohit Sharma while taking a swipe at selectors amid retirement buzz.
