Just over a month after being sacked by the BCCI, T Dilip has been reinstated as Team India's fielding coach ahead of the upcoming tour of England. India are scheduled to visit England for a five-match Test series that will get underway next month.
In April, the BCCI sacked a number of support staff members of the Indian team following the team's poor display in Australia. India had suffered a humiliating 3-1 loss in the five-match Test series against Australia. After a review meeting, the BCCI sacked T Dilip as well as assistant coach Abhishek Nayar and conditioning coach Soham Desai.
The BCCI was expected to name a new fielding coach ahead of the England tour. However, the board has decided to reinstate T Dilip, according to a report in the Indian Express. He has also been given a one-year contract by the board.
T Dilip becomes India's fielding coach once again:
The report stated that the BCCI was keen on appointing a foreign fielding coach. However, the board couldn’t find a suitable candidate. As a result, T Dilip has been re-appointed as the fielding coach.
"We have decided to reappoint Dilip for a year and he will be travelling with the Indian team for England. His contract so far is for one year," a source in the BCCI told the news outlet.
Dilip's first stint with the Indian team began in 2021 when Rahul Dravid was appointed the head coach. When Dravid and his group's tenure ended after the 2022 T20 World Cup, only he was given an extension till March 2025.
Dilip is quite popular among the Indian players and also hogged the limelight during the 2023 World Cup with a unique method. After every match, he used to hand a medal to India's best fielder, a process that earned great appreciation from the fans.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also hailed him as a celebrity coach and praised him for improving the team's slip catching.
"Close-in catching, in places like short-leg, is a very difficult thing. You don’t get good fielders like this. Jaiswal himself volunteers and stands up. He also does head-to-head work. So, all in all, we didn’t get to see Dilip sir’s name not getting mentioned more prominently," Ashwin said.
The news outlet also reported that India's new Test captain, Shubman Gill, is likely to miss the second warm-up game at Northampton, which will be played on June 6. Gill is currently leading the Gujarat Titans in the ongoing IPL 2025.
The Titans have made the cut for the playoffs. The IPL final is scheduled to take place on June 3, and if the Titans qualify for the final, Gill is likely to miss the second warm-up game.
