The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly said to gain a whopping sum of INR 218 crore from broadcaster Star Sports.

It should be noted that this amount is an excessive payment for the Indian board as mentioned in its financial note.

BCCI to receive INR ₹218 crore more from Star than what was planned

According to a report by Hindustan Times, Star Sports will end up paying INR 6356.1 crore. That’s ₹218 crore more than what was planned in the original five-year contract, hosting one more match (total of 103) to what was scheduled. This profit does not include the money earned in the IPL 2022 media rights.

BCCI sold the bilateral series rights for a value on average of INR 60 crore for each game. The plan went well for the first two years but after Covid-19 hit the entire world, two T20I games against South Africa at home were cancelled.

BCCI’s special management for IPL

The BCCI was scared to lose the big amount of IPL in the pandemic but they shifted the cash-ruch league to the Untied Arab Emirates. It was definitely a challenging task to hold the entire event there. The Indian board held the IPL 2021 in two intervals – each in India and UAE in the span of six months.

In the following year (2021), India played limited bilateral matches at home, with one Test against England was cut and two T20I matches were added as a result. The ODI series against Zimbabwe was called off and the Indian team now visits the African nation to compensate for the ICC World Super League points.

However, the points do not bother India as they have qualified for the 2023 World Cup by dint of being the hosts of the marquee event. But Zimbabwe will vouch for those crucial points as they are positioned 12th on the table.

India played five T20I matches against South Africa at home with the game washed out and the series was squared at 2-2. According to reports, the Proteas will return to play six white-ball matches against India (three T20Is and three ODIs).

India will play three T20I matches against Australia just after they return from the Asia Cup 2022 in UAE.
