Team India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant suffered an injury during the opening day (Wednesday, July 23) of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued an official statement on Pant's injury, which forced him to retire hurt while batting.
Pant injured his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes during the 69th over of India’s first innings. He was unable to walk, forcing him to leave the field in an ambulance cart. The left-handed batter’s chances of returning to bat in the match appear slim, given the severity of the injury.
Notably, the injury comes at a crucial time for India, who trail 1-2 in the series and must win this Test to stay alive. The visitors are now under added pressure in this high-stakes contest.

Rishabh Pant’s Participation in Remainder of Match Uncertain
Speaking at the press conference after Day 1, Sai Sudharsan was asked about Rishabh Pant’s injury. He confirmed that Pant was in a lot of pain and had been taken to the hospital for scans. Sudharsan added that the rest of the batting unit is prepared to step up.
“Oh he was in a lot of pain and he's now at the hospital taking scans. We'll know about the update probably soon. If he's not coming back in this match it's obviously a blow but the other batters are also ready to do their part,” the batter stated (via RevSportz).
