India captain Rohit Sharma became a part of a fresh controversy when a politician from the country's grand-old party Congress used words like "fat" and "unimpressive" for him. The comments were made by Shama Mohamed, who is a spokesperson of the party.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now decided to jump into the controversy. The board has come in defense of Rohit Sharma and slammed the Congress politician for such comments.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia condemned the comments and claimed that it can have a demoralizing effect on the player in the middle of a big tournament. It is to be noted that Rohit is currently leading India in the ongoing Champions Trophy.

BCCI slams Congress politician for body shaming Rohit Sharma
Devajit Saikia spoke to NDTV regarding this matter and labelled the comments as "unfortunate". He hopes that such comments do not have any effect on the players and also asked the politicians not to make any derogatory comments for their own publicity.
"Very unfortunate for a responsible person to pass such a trivial comment when the team is in the middle of such a crucial ICC tournament. It may have demoralising effect on an individual or the team," Saikia said.
"All the players are performing to their highest potential and results are visible. I hope individuals will desist from making such derogatory statements for personal publicity sake," he added.
What did Shama Mohamed say about Rohit Sharma?
During India's match against New Zealand in the ongoing Champions Trophy, Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed decided to take a dig at Rohit Sharma's fitness. She even called Rohit the "most unimpressive captain" of the country.
"@ImRo45 is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And, of course, the most unimpressive captain India has ever had," Shama had posted on X (formerly Twitter).
She was brutally trolled by the cricket fans and the rival party BJP for body shaming an iconic player. Shama was even forced to delete her tweet after facing severe backlash but later defended her comments by calling it a "generic tweet".
"It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have been attacked for no reason. When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. What is wrong in saying? It is a democracy," she told ANI.
