India's poor run in Test cricket recently has forced the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to rethink the team's future. India recently lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 to Australia 1-3 and were also eliminated from the race for the World Test Championship Final.

Despite winning the first match of the series, India underperformed in the next four Test to allow Australia win the series. The performance of the team's senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has been under the scanner after India's loss.

Both the batters are world-class but were way below-par throughout the series. The performance of Kohli and Rohit was one of the main reasons for India's disappointing performance in the batting department.

BCCI unhappy with India's poor performance in BGT 2024-25

According to Dainik Jagran, the BCCI is upset about the team's performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy which also led to India's elimination from the race for WTC Final. It is the first time on three occasions that India have failed to qualify for the summit clash.

Devajit Saikia, who is set to be BCCI's new secretary, and Prabhtej Bhatia, who will be the board's treasurer, filed their respective nominations at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai recently.

Both the men addressed the team's poor run in the Test series against Australia while filing their nominations. Both these men will take charge from January 12.

The board authorities discussed the performances of star players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill who were highly disappointing with the bat. All the members of the board were visibly upset and were looking to take a tough call.

Fresh updates on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

In the meeting, there were also some fresh updates on the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. According to the same report, a senior BCCI official confirmed that neither Virat Kohli nor Rohit Sharma are looking to retire from Test cricket anytime soon. However, the official ensured that it was time to take some harsh decisions.

While the senior players are not looking to call time on their careers yet, it is believed that the board can't force them to retire. However, the selectors will be taking some big decisions given the team's recent performances.

"The officials of the team are also unhappy with the defeat. The team going through a difficult phase of change will now have to do a lot of introspection after returning home. When asked about this, the top BCCI official said I was listening to Gavaskar and Irfan after the match. When asked about Virat and Rohit, he said there are no indications that these two will retire from Tests on their own. BCCI cannot even ask them to retire, but something will have to be done for the team's betterment. Certainly, when the time comes, the selectors will take the right decision," read the report.

During the nominations of Devajit Saikia and Prabhtej Bhatia, there was also discussion on Virat Kohli's constant problems with the balls outside off stump. He was out to the balls outside off stump several times in this series.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's dwindling numbers

Virat Kohli's dismissals were almost similar every time which raised questions on his ability to tackle such deliveries. Kohli scored 190 runs in five Tests in the series at an average of 23.75. After scoring a hundred in the first Test at Perth, he was unable to make his mark again in the next four games.

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma too had a poor series and even had to drop himself in the last Test. Rohit scored 31 runs in three Tests at an average of 6.20. He didn't play the first and fifth Tests of the series.
