BCCI to enter feud with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma over ODI future
PC: X

Reports have suggested that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will discuss their future in ODI cricket with the BCCI once the board and Indian management shift their focus to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, which might take place possibly after the conclusion of the Asia Cup.

The doubts over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's international careers continue to build, as the two veterans issued an official statement mentioning their retirement, and neither has the BCCI made any official or direct claim for the same.

However, the latest clips circulating over social media have found Virat and Rohit Sharma in the nets, training hard for their potential India return in the white-ball series against Australia in October.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to discuss career goals with BCCI

News18 has reported that the BCCI has claimed discussions will be held to decide the fate of the two legendary Indian international cricketers. The next ODI World Cup will be played in 2027, and India is still aiming to break their World Cup drought from 2011, which they missed in disheartening fashion in 2023.

The two veterans, Rohit and Virat Kohli, have retired from the other two formats of the game. Recent reports have also confirmed that Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, has an extension of contract until June 2026.

The only concern regarding Kohli and Rohit's role in the World Cup is not form but their increasing age, since Kohli will be nearing 39 when the next World Cup rolls in, while Rohit will be 40. Some reports have claimed the Australia series will draw a curtain to their international career.

Rohit Sharma's wish would mark the decisive call on Shreyas Iyer's future in ODI captaincy

According to a recent report from Dainik Jagran published today, Shreyas Iyer, the Asia Cup-snubbed middle-order batter, has emerged as the frontrunner successor for Rohit Sharma in the Indian ODI side.

The sources have, however, mentioned that Iyer's fate as India's captain would be in the hands of skipper Rohit Sharma. He can be appointed as the captain only after knowing how long Rohit wants to continue playing in the format.

Some reports have claimed that Rohit has been urged to retire by the BCCI, as they look to rebuild their squad strongly, much before the ICC World Cup, since newer players would need some time to fill the big boots of a veteran cricketer like Rohit and Virat Kohli.

PTI reported BCCI's clear plan for the 2027 World Cup

Earlier this month, the PTI had reported that BCCI wants to have a clear plan to move ahead to the ICC World Cup 2027, but has cited the presence of senior cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in a meeting that decides their fate in the format.

After the discussions with the veterans, the board is likely to reach a conclusion over their participation and will then plan for the ICC tournament.

“Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event, as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time," news agency PTI quoted a source as saying.
