The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly has revealed the real reason behind the cancellation of the 5th and final Test match between India and England which was scheduled to begin on September 10 at Old Trafford, Manchester.
Notably, ahead of the 5th Test match junior physio Yogesh Parmer tested positive for Covid-19 in Manchester and many Indian players were in close contact with him. Also, previously Head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach Ramakrishnan Sridhar, were found positive for Covid-19 and they did not travel with the team to London for the 5th and final Test.
“The players refused to play but you can’t blame them’: Sourav Ganguly
During an interaction with The Telegraph, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly was asked about discussions that took place between the players which led to the cancellation of the Test match.
To which the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president replied that the Indian cricketer refused to participate in the match after they heard the Physio Yogesh Parmar has contracted the virus. Notably, Parmar was the only physio left as Nitin Patel was also in isolation. Sourav Ganguly asserted:
“The players refused to play but you can’t blame them. Physio Yogesh Parmar was such a close contact of the players. Being the only one available after Nitin Patel isolated himself, he mixed freely with the players and even performed their Covid-19 tests.”
Further Sourav Ganguly added that Yogesh Parmar used to give players massages and he was part of their everyday lifestyle. The former Indian captain also said that players were left ‘devastated’ to know that Parmar was Covid-19 positive as they remained very close to him and players were scared that they might have caught the infection.
” He also used to give them a massage, he was part of their everyday lives.… The players were devastated when they came to know that he had tested positive for Covid-19. They feared they must have contracted the disease and were dead scared. It’s not easy staying in a bubble. Of course, you have to respect their feelings.”
Meanwhile, all the Indian players went through a Covid-19 test after the Physio was found positive and luckily no player of the India national cricket team was tested positive for covid. Meanwhile, after getting tested negative most of the players have left England and joined their IPL franchises in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the second phase of IPL 2021.
