The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held a review meeting with the Indian women’s team in Guwahati on Monday. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia chaired the meeting, which was attended by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, and head coach Amol Muzumdar.
The Indian women’s team has experienced contrasting results in recent months. After a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign in England during June and July, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side bounced back by winning the Women’s Asia Cup in the UAE and the Asian Games gold medal in Japan.
BCCI Reviews India’s Recent Performances
According to Cricbuzz, the meeting focused on assessing India’s recent performances. The team’s T20 World Cup campaign in England fell below expectations, but India then produced a strong response in the following competitions.
They won the Women’s Asia Cup in the UAE before securing the gold medal at the Asian Games in Japan. The turnaround has given the management several positives to consider while planning the team’s next phase.
Head coach Amol Muzumdar was part of Monday’s discussions as the BCCI assessed the team’s progress and areas that still need improvement.
No major decision appears to have emerged from the meeting, although the BCCI has not officially detailed the outcome. There have also been no indications of controversy surrounding the women’s review, unlike the recent men’s review meeting.
Harmanpreet Kaur Set To Continue As Captain
Captaincy was another issue surrounding the Indian women’s team after the disappointing T20 World Cup campaign. There had been calls in some quarters for a change, but Harmanpreet Kaur appears secure in the role for now.
Harmanpreet attended the meeting alongside Smriti Mandhana and Muzumdar, with no indication that the BCCI plans to make a leadership change. India’s success in the Women’s Asia Cup and Asian Games has also strengthened the case for continuity.
The BCCI is expected to allow the current leadership group to build on the improvements made since the World Cup. The recent titles have eased some of the pressure around the team and provided a positive platform for the next phase.
There was no information on whether women’s chief selector Amita Sharma attended the Guwahati meeting. However, unlike the situation involving men’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar at the men’s review, her absence or presence has not led to any controversy.
Women’s Selectors To Finalize Zimbabwe Squad
The women’s selection committee, headed by Amita Sharma, is expected to meet on Tuesday, October 6, to finalize India’s squad for the upcoming six-match series against Zimbabwe. The BCCI will then have its next major selection decision ahead of the historic tour.
Zimbabwe Women’s visit will be historic as it will mark the first bilateral series between the two teams in India. The tour will feature three T20Is and three ODIs and will run for around two weeks.
The T20I leg will be played in Raipur on October 16, 18 and 20. The teams will then move to Vadodara for the three-match ODI series on October 23, 26 and 28.
The ODI matches will form part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2025-29. Notably, the selectors will need to balance opportunities for emerging players with the need to field a strong side. The series also gives the management an opportunity to assess squad combinations and build depth.
