The BCCI, on Saturday, announced the return of domestic cricket for the 2021-22 season. The COVID-19 pandemic had forced the BCCI to conduct a curtailed domestic season, taking into account the timelines and the health and safety of the players. But from September 2021 till March 2022, the board will hold 2127 matches across men’s and women’s cricket, making it a full-fledged season.
The 2020-21 domestic season started after the Indian Premier League, which had to occur in the UAE due to the COVID-19 outbreak in India. It began with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, starting on the 10th of January this year. While conducting the Vijay Hazare Trophy was possible, it was the first time since 1934-35 that the Ranji Trophy could not occur.
But the 2020-22 season starts on the 21st of September when the Senior Women’s One Day League takes place, followed by the Senior Women’s One Day Challenger Trophy from the 27th of October. Among the men’s cricket, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is lined up first, commencing from the 20th of October and ending on the 12th of November.
Ranji Trophy returns to the fold as BCCI plans to start from November:
Four days after the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final, Ranji Trophy will get underway as it would be played in a three-month window. It would occur between the 16th of November 2021 to the 19th of February 2022.
The season would end with the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scheduled to take place from the 23rd of February to the 26th of March. The BCCI remains confident of hosting all 2127 games across various age groups in men’s and women’s division in a safe environment without impacting anybody’s health.
