In a major development, the Amita Sharma-led Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Women's Selection committee has been denied a share in the INR 51 Crore cash prize announced by the board.
Instead of the new Board of Control for Cricket in India selection committee, the previous selection panel led by Neetu David will get a share of the cash prize, as they were the ones who picked the squad of the India Women's National Cricket Team for the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025.
INR 51 Crore Cash Prize Awarded To India Women's
On Monday, November 3, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced a prize money of INR 51 Crore for the India Women's National Cricket Team after they beat the South Africa Women's National Cricket Team to win the World Cup.
In the summit clash at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, the hosts played a stunning brand of cricket and registered a comprehensive 52-run victory to get their hands on the title.
After the win, the Board of Control for Cricket in India decided to honor the momentous achievement of the India Women's team and announced a cash reward of INR 51 crore.
"To honour this unprecedented success, the BCCI has announced a cash reward of INR 51 crore for the players, support staff and selection committee, in recognition of their remarkable performance, dedication and contribution to the nation’s sporting glory.
"Under the astute guidance of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the players, support staff and every stakeholder have delivered an extraordinary performance on the grandest stage, fulfilling the aspirations of millions of fans across the country," the BCCI stated.
New BCCI selection committee denied the cash price
Since the prize money was announced, there was confusion over which selection committee would receive the share - the new one or the old one.
Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India named Amita Sharma, Sulakshana Naik, Jaya Sharma, and Sravanthi Naidu as the new members of the Women’s Selection Committee, with Shyama Dey being retained from the previous panel.
However, the World Cup squad was actually picked up by Neetu David along with Renu Margrate, Arati Vaidya, Kalpana Venkatachar, and Shyama Dey.
Now, Cricbuzz has reported that the old selection committee will receive the bonuses and not the new one. Notably, the old and new selection committee - both were not involved in the decision-making to replace Pratika Rawal in the squad when she got injured, and the team management made the call to include Shafali Verma in the squad.
BCCI thanks Jay Shah
In an official media release, the Board of Control for Cricket in India thanked the current ICC chairman Jay Shah, who played a key role in promoting gender equality in Indian cricket and introduced pay parity during his stint as the BCCI secretary.
"The BCCI also takes this opportunity to highlight the pivotal role of Mr. Jay Shah, who served with distinction as Honorary Secretary of the BCCI and now holds the position of Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC)," the board said.
"During his tenure at the BCCI, Mr Shah championed significant initiatives for women’s cricket accelerating the expansion of domestic structures, launching elite-level competitions and ensuring improved infrastructure.
"As ICC Chairman, he has been a strong advocate for gender-equality across the sport. Under his leadership, the ICC announced a landmark increase in prize-money for the Women’s World Cup, signalling that women cricketers will be treated on par with their male peers."
