Abhishek Nayar made it into the headlines after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sacked him from his post as the assistant coach of the India National Cricket Team. The development became public amid the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Abhishek Nayar reportedly was removed from the post of assistant coach as BCCI blamed him for the Indian batters' underwhelming performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series in Australia. The Rohit Sharma-led side lost the series 3-1 and also went on to miss the place in the ICC World Test Championship final.
Senior players of India are unhappy with the sacking of Abhishek Nayar
There were reports which added that BCCI added Sitanshu Kotak as the batting coach ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 so that they could sideline Abhishek Nayar. Even though the India National Cricket Team won the tournament, Nayar faced the sacking without any solid reason.
However, in the latest development, as per the reports in Cricbuzz, it is learned that some of the senior players of the India National Cricket Team are unhappy with the sacking of Nayar. The likes of Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and others openly praised him for his work recently.
Even though he has been sacked, Rohit Sharma is continuing to work with Nayar. Ahead of the game between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, the senior Indian batter was seen working with him at the Mumbai Cricket Association's (MCA) BKC facility.

After getting sacked from the India National Cricket Team, Abhishek Nayar joined Kolkata Knight Riders again as an assistant coach. He was seen working with the team ahead of the game against the Gujarat Titans, and it will be a massive boost for the franchise, especially with the big figure he has been for them.

Apart from Nayar, the Board of Control for Cricket in India also removed fielding coach T Dilip, trainer Soham Desai, and masseur Arun Kanade from their post. The reports in Cricbuzz suggested that they were all close to the India National Cricket Team ODI and Test skipper Rohit Sharma.
Nayar, who is widely respected in Indian cricketing circles for his grasp of modern coaching know-how, will be keen to turn things around for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. The defending champions are having a tough time in the league and have managed just three wins.
