Rohit Sharma’s future in the One Day Internationals (ODIs) is uncertain after hanging up his boots in both Test and T20I cricket, at least as captain of the India National Cricket Team. Rohit Sharma will reportedly be replaced by Shubman Gill as India’s ODI captain after the England tour.

The Indian selectors are reportedly planning to follow a long-term strategy for the ODI captaincy, just like they did for the Test team. With the next ICC ODI World Cup scheduled for October 2027, the current ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, will be 40 years old by then.

Indian selectors eye Shubman Gill for ODI captaincy as Rohit Sharma’s future unclear

Given his age, it’s uncertain whether he’ll still be at the top of his game in terms of form and fitness. So, the selectors are reportedly planning to hand over the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill to avoid a situation where India would have three different captains in all three formats of the game.

Currently, Gill is leading the Test team, while Suryakumar Yadav is the T20I captain. However, Rohit stressed that he will not retire from ODIs any time soon, with many speculating that he is aiming to play in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 in South Africa, but the selectors are not sure about that.

However, a decision on whether they will hand over the ODI captaincy to Gill will depend on how he performs with the bat and leads the Indian cricket team in the upcoming five-match Test series against England. It is being said that Gill must prove his credentials across the format with the bat.

No talks with Rohit Sharma over his ODI future: BCCI source

Meanwhile, a BCCI official revealed that many board officials and selectors believed Rohit Sharma was planning to step away from ODIs after winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, but he decided to continue and later retired from Tests.

The official further said that there hasn't been any conversation between Rohit and the national selectors about his future in the ODI format since then.

As reported by the Hindustan Times, a BCCI official said, “Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors since over his ODI future.”

Selectors wary of Rohit Sharma’s fitness after Impact Player stint in IPL 2025

Well, Rohit’s age isn’t the main concern, but his slowing reflexes and frequent fitness issues are forcing us to look beyond him for the captaincy. He played the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with a hamstring niggle and was mostly used as an Impact Player by the Mumbai Indians during the IPL 2025, which raised doubts about his long-term fitness and availability.

Notably, India has 12 ODIs lined up before the ICC T20 World Cup next year. Since the T20 World Cup 2026 is the immediate focus, these matches will be used to try out different players. The ODI series in Bangladesh this August is yet to be officially confirmed.

After that, India is scheduled to play three ODIs in Australia in October, followed by a home series of three ODIs each against South Africa (November–December) and New Zealand (January 2026).
